Interview With Groovie Mann From My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult

Just a few hours before their show, I sat down with Frankie Nardiello, A.K.A. Groovie Mann, vocalist for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. It was almost 30 years since I had last seen the band perform. I caught them early on in their career and have been a fan ever since. Groovie is one of the nicest rock stars you’re likely to ever meet. He always stays after the shows and visits with fans and signs items. Thrill Kill Kult are veterans of the industrial, electro-rock scene and have been incredibly influential on many other bands. The band was one of the lucky few to be a part of the now-legendary Wax Trax Records! The band released a new album this year entitled “In The House Of Strange Affairs”. Groovie gave me the scoop on recording this album as well as his take on the music business, touring and so much more.

MY LIFE WITH THE THRILL KILL KULT Announce "Strange Affairs" Fall 2019 Tour

Also, check out our review of their great live show below:

Artist: My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
When: November 2, 2019
Where: Tampa, Florida
The Crowbar
Review by: Bobby Caughron

Review:

“My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult” are true legends of the industrial rock scene.  Starting out on the Wax Trax Records label in Chicago, along with other visionary artists like Ministry, KMFDM, Front 242, A Split Second and Frontline Assembly, TKK (short for Thrill Kill Kult)  and those original Wax Trax artists are to industrial music what bands like “The Sex Pistols”, The Ramones” and “The Dead Kennedys” are to punk rock.

Over 30 years since their debut,  I can emphatically state that My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult still delivers the thrills with the same intensity.  Performing for a sold-out crowd, The band hit the stage around 10:30 pm to the rousing chants of the audience demanding “Thrill Kill Kult”.  The stage was decorated to imitate the cover of their latest album “In The House Of Strange Affairs”, which by the way, is their 13th studio release, not counting EP’s, Remix albums and Collections.  The band members hit the stage with the musical mastermind, Buzz McCoy appearing first, followed by Mimi Star on bass and Justin Bennett of Skinny Puppy fame on drums.  Last, but not least, the ever-charismatic frontman, Groovie Mann appeared front and center to the crowds’ cheers.  Groovie Mann is clearly in his element on the stage.  He prowled the stage like a predator claiming his territory.  It’s simply an unbeatable mix of energetic performance and horror-themed music with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. The band played four songs from the new album and with their lengthy discography, they performed crowd favorites which were essentially a greatest hits setlist.  I spoke with Groovie Mann before the show started and he stated that “In The House Of Strange Affairs” was written to fill the gap musically between the “Confessions Of A Knife…” and the “Sexplosion” albums.  As most fans know, the sound changed quite drastically with “Sexplosion”.  The sound went in a more electro-disco style, which is a complete 180 from the industrial rock sound of the previous albums.  This album helps to merge the sounds of both styles and the band has done it quite well.  They played a nearly 2-hour long set with standout tracks like “A Daisy Chain 4 Satan”, “Do You Fear For Your Child”, “The Days Of Swine And Roses” and the rocking track, “The Chains Of Fame” from the new album. Of course, the show wouldn’t have been complete without their spectacular hit “After The Flesh”, from the Crow movie soundtrack, which they performed after the ecstatic crowd demanded an encore.

I highly recommend that you catch “My Life With The Thrill Kult” on one of their remaining live tour dates.  You will definitely get your money’s worth and you will leave the venue simply blown away by these Godfathers of industrial rock.
