Glenn Hughes is known as “The Voice Of Rock”, and with good reason. After stints in bands like Trapeze, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and more recently The Dead Daisies, and of course, an incredible solo career, his versatility, and soulful singing have been on display for years and grant him a living legend status in my book.
On Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 Glenn hit the stage at 7:30 pm at the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, Florida to a sold-out crowd.
The tour was his last stop on the US tour in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Deep Purple’s Burn album. “The Voice of Rock” did not disappoint! Tearing through a great set of songs including “Stormbringer”, “Might Just Take Your Life”, the funky classic “Sail Away”, the soulful “Mistreated”, “Gettin’ Tighter”, “You Keep On Moving” and of course, the title track “Burn”, Glenn’s full musical and vocal talents were on display. The enthusiastic crowd was one of the most excited I’ve seen in a long while. His voice sounds absolutely incredible and it’s amazing that he can still hit those soaring high notes at the age of 72. As they say, age is just a number and that’s definitely true here because he sounded better than ever.
His stage presence was energetic and he prowled the stage like a true rock star, but with a great admiration for everyone who came out to see him perform. If you’ve never had the chance to see Glenn live, you must make it a point to catch him when he tours for his new upcoming album. A very humble and gracious performer who gave his heart and soul throughout the show. It was truly quite a spectacle to behold.
Of course, he closed with the song “Burn” but it was quite fun to see the band perform the Deep Purple classic “Highway Star” just before that. In fact, it was hard to tell who was having more fun, the audience or Glenn and his band. By the end of the show, the fans were on their feet and showing their appreciation for an absolutely incredible performance that will live on in their memories for years to come. Glenn Hughes is truly a one-of-a-kind performer.
