Slipknot

Slipknot Biography:

Slipknot formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995, created by percussionist Shawn Crahan, vocalist Anders Colsefni, and bassist Paul Gray. The group grew out of the local metal scene, where members had already been playing together in earlier projects. As they began shaping their identity, the band cycled through several early lineup changes, eventually expanding into a large, multi‑member ensemble that incorporated additional percussion, samples, turntables, and dual guitars. This approach laid the foundation for the chaotic, high‑intensity style that would become their trademark.

Their first release, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. (1996), served as an experimental introduction but did not gain major traction. The band added Corey Taylor as vocalist in 1997. The band’s breakthrough arrived with their self‑titled 1999 album, which introduced a wider audience to their aggressive sound, mask‑driven visual identity, and explosive live performances. Their follow‑up, Iowa (2001), pushed their intensity even further and helped solidify their reputation as one of the most extreme mainstream metal acts of the era.

After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) in 2004, showcasing a broader range of songwriting while maintaining their signature heaviness. Another hiatus followed before the band released All Hope Is Gone in 2008, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and marked a major commercial milestone. The 2010s brought further evolution with .5: The Gray Chapter (2014), created in the aftermath of bassist Paul Gray’s death, and later albums We Are Not Your Kind (2019) and The End, So Far (2022), each reflecting shifts in lineup and musical direction.

Slipknot’s membership has changed frequently over the decades. Founding bassist Paul Gray passed away in 2010, and drummer Joey Jordison,a key creative force, was dismissed in 2013. Newer members such as bassist Alessandro Venturella, drummer Jay Weinberg (later replaced by Eloy Casagrande in 2024), and percussionist Michael Pfaff joined in later years, while longtime sampler/keyboardist Craig Jones departed in 2023.

Across their career, Slipknot has released multiple studio albums, live recordings, and compilations, selling over 30 million records worldwide and more than 12 million in the United States. Their influence extends far beyond their music: the band’s masked aesthetic, intense stage presence, and genre‑blending approach have made them one of the most recognizable and impactful metal acts of the modern era. As of the mid‑2020s, Slipknot continues to tour and record, maintaining a powerful presence in heavy music with a lineup that blends founding members and new creative contributors.
