Let me start by saying that it takes some serious balls to cover any song by Heart’s Ann Wilson. However, Devilskin vocalist Jennie Skulander does a really great job on this song. The song is definitely on the heavier side from what Heart did originally with the now classic song “Barracuda”.
Hailing from New Zealand, Devilskin manages to do this classic rocker justice and then some. Fans of Halestorm should absolutely eat this up as Devilskin’s sound is somewhat reminiscent of Halestorm’s balancing act of mainstream rock and metal. Hearing this driving version of “Barracuda” has put the band on my radar and I’m now anxiously awaiting hearing new music by this really solid band. If I had any constructive criticism of the song, it would be that it feels like they held back somewhat and maybe tried to stay a little too close to the original version of the song. It’s a tough call because when doing a cover song, everyone wants to do it with respect and admiration for the original artist and Devilskin absolutely does that. With firey guitar work, thundering drums and bass, and the incredible voice of Jennie on the mic, this band looks and sounds like the real deal.
