Godsmack formed in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1995, when vocalist Sully Erna, bassist Robbie Merrill, guitarist Lee Richards, and drummer Tommy Stewart came together under the name The Scam. The group soon adopted the name Godsmack and began performing in local clubs, building momentum through early songs that gained strong regional attention.
As the band refined its lineup, guitarist Tony Rombola joined in 1996, and the group recorded its independent debut All Wound Up… in 1997. The album’s growing popularity led to a deal with Republic/Universal, who re‑released a remixed version as the band’s official self‑titled debut in 1998. This release marked their national breakthrough and set the foundation for their rise in the hard‑rock and alternative‑metal scenes.
Godsmack’s commercial ascent accelerated in the 2000s. Their albums Awake (2000), Faceless (2003), IV (2006), and The Oracle (2010) all achieved major chart success, including three consecutive No. 1 debuts on the Billboard 200. The band also became a fixture on major tours and festivals, including multiple appearances at Ozzfest and extensive arena tours supporting their releases.
The lineup evolved over time, with drummer Shannon Larkin joining in 2002 and becoming a long‑standing member until 2024. Guitarist Tony Rombola also remained a key figure through 2024. By the mid‑2020s, the band’s roster shifted again, with Sully Erna and Robbie Merrill continuing as the core members while newer musicians stepped into the guitar and drum roles.
Across their career, Godsmack has released nine studio albums, including later‑era highlights such as 1000hp (2014), When Legends Rise (2018), and Lighting Up the Sky (2023). Their catalog includes 25 Top 10 rock radio singles, 12 No. 1 hits, and multiple multi‑platinum certifications.
Today, Godsmack stands as one of the most successful American hard‑rock bands of the past three decades. Their music blends heavy grooves, melodic hooks, and a distinctive rhythmic punch, supported by a long history of chart‑topping albums and high‑energy live performances. Even as their lineup evolves, the band continues to tour and maintain a strong presence in modern rock.
