Disturbed formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1994, beginning as a band called Brawl created by guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist Steve “Fuzz” Kmak. When their original vocalist departed, the group held open auditions, eventually bringing in David Draiman in 1996. With this addition, the band adopted the name Disturbed and began shaping the heavy, groove‑driven sound that would define their early years.
The band’s debut album, The Sickness (2000), marked their breakthrough, earning multi‑platinum status and propelling them into the mainstream metal scene. Its success set the stage for a remarkable run: Believe (2002), Ten Thousand Fists (2005), Indestructible (2008), and Asylum (2010) all debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, establishing Disturbed as one of the few rock bands to achieve multiple consecutive chart‑topping releases.
After years of nonstop touring and recording, the band entered a hiatus in 2011, during which members pursued side projects and released a compilation of unreleased material titled The Lost Children. Disturbed reunited in 2015 with the album Immortalized, followed by Evolution (2018) and Divisive (2022), each reflecting a blend of their signature heaviness with broader hard‑rock influences. Their catalog has collectively sold more than 17 million records worldwide, and several albums have earned RIAA multi‑platinum certifications.
Disturbed’s lineup has remained notably stable since the mid‑2000s. John Moyer joined as bassist in 2004, completing the long‑running quartet of Draiman, Donegan, Wengren, and Moyer. This consistency has contributed to the band’s cohesive sound and enduring presence in modern metal. Their music—rooted in aggressive riffs, powerful vocals, and themes of resilience—has produced numerous Mainstream Rock chart‑toppers and earned multiple Grammy nominations.
In addition to their studio success, Disturbed is known for high‑energy live performances and a strong connection with fans. Their mascot, “The Guy,” has become an iconic symbol associated with the band’s imagery and album art. As of the mid‑2020s, Disturbed continues to tour, release new music, and maintain a prominent place in heavy metal, highlighted by anniversary tours and ongoing work on future material.
