Deftones

Deftones formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988, when vocalist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, and drummer Abe Cunningham began playing together as teenagers. Their early bond grew out of the local skateboarding scene, and the group gradually expanded with the addition of bassist Chi Cheng and later keyboardist/turntablist Frank Delgado, who became a full member in 1999.

After solidifying their lineup in the early 1990s, the band signed with Maverick Records and released their debut album, Adrenaline, in 1995. Extensive touring helped them build a dedicated following, and their second album, Around the Fur (1997), earned platinum status in the United States. These early releases established their blend of heavy riffs, atmospheric textures, and emotionally driven vocals, elements that would become central to their identity.

Deftones reached a major creative milestone with White Pony in 2000, a record that marked a shift toward more experimental songwriting and broader influences. The album’s success elevated the band’s profile and demonstrated their willingness to evolve beyond the boundaries of the late‑1990s metal scene. Their self‑titled album in 2003 continued this momentum, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and reinforcing their reputation as one of alternative metal’s most innovative acts.

The mid‑2000s brought both artistic growth and personal challenges. Their 2006 album Saturday Night Wrist reflected internal tensions but still showcased their commitment to pushing their sound forward. In 2008, bassist Chi Cheng was critically injured in a car accident, leaving him in a minimally conscious state until his passing in 2013. During this period, the band paused work on an unfinished album and brought in Sergio Vega as bassist, who remained with them until 2021.

Beginning in 2010, Deftones entered a new creative era with a series of critically acclaimed albums: Diamond Eyes (2010), Koi No Yokan (2012), Gore (2016), Ohms (2020), and Private Music (2025). These releases highlighted their ability to merge heaviness with ambiance, incorporating dream‑pop, post‑hardcore, and art‑rock influences while maintaining the emotional intensity that defined their early work.

Today, Deftones’ core lineup consists of Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham, and Frank Delgado, with live bass duties handled by Fred Sablan since 2022. Their willingness to evolve, paired with a distinctive atmospheric style, has earned them a reputation as one of the most forward‑thinking and enduring bands in modern heavy music.
