L.A. Guns

L.A. Guns

Formed in Los Angeles in 1983, L.A. Guns became one of the defining acts of the Sunset Strip’s hard‑rock explosion. The band fused glam attitude, street‑level grit, and classic heavy‑metal swagger, carving out a sound that bridged the gap between raw punk energy and melodic hard rock.

The group was founded by guitarist Tracii Guns, whose name would later appear in the earliest lineup of Guns N’ Roses before he returned to his own project. After several lineup changes, the classic version solidified with:

Phil Lewis – vocals

Tracii Guns – guitar

Steve Riley – drums

Kelly Nickels – bass

Mick Cripps – rhythm guitar

This lineup delivered the band’s signature albums — L.A. Guns (1988), Cocked & Loaded (1989), and Hollywood Vampires (1991) — featuring hits like “Rip and Tear,” “Never Enough,” and “The Ballad of Jayne.” Their music balanced sleazy riffs with melodic hooks, earning them a loyal following during the glam‑metal era.

Through the 1990s and 2000s, L.A. Guns weathered lineup turbulence and changing musical climates. Tracii Guns briefly departed to form Brides of Destruction, while Phil Lewis kept the band’s name alive with new members and albums such as Waking the Dead (2002) and Tales from the Strip (2005).
Eventually, Guns and Lewis reunited, restoring the band’s classic chemistry and returning to the stage with renewed intensity.

In the 2010s and 2020s, the reunited duo released a string of acclaimed records — The Missing Peace (2017), The Devil You Know (2019), and Black Diamonds (2023) — proving that their brand of gritty, melodic hard rock still resonates. Their sound remains anchored by Tracii’s fiery guitar work and Phil’s unmistakable voice.

L.A. Guns stands as one of the few Sunset Strip bands to maintain both credibility and continuity. Their catalog captures the evolution of Hollywood rock — from glam excess to mature, hard‑edged songwriting — while their live shows continue to deliver the same swagger that made them icons of the scene.
