Originally termed Heavy Metal, now shortened to Metal, this music genre has its roots in bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. The bands that were deemed metal music took hard rock to the next level with an even more powerful and aggressive sound. Godfathers of the metal scene were bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Motorhead, amongst others.
