Members of the band Mr. Big recently announced that they would be doing a reunion of sorts this year which would include live shows. This is spectacular news for rock music fans who appreciate true musicianship.
For the last few years, we’ve heard nothing but complaints about various rock bands using multi-backing tracks, lip-syncing, and completely playing to pre-recorded tracks. If you go see Mr. Big live, you will see a real band perform live…and that’s a true rarity these days.
Mr. Big is a musician’s dream band with the talent of guitar virtuoso Paul Gilbert and legendary bass player Billy Sheehan alongside accomplished singer Eric Martin and the soon-to-be-named touring drummer (rumors circulate that the front runners are Deen Castronovo or Mike Portnoy, although Portnoy has said that it’s not him).
So this is your chance to see a band that can not only play their instruments live but delivers faithful renditions of their songs at a higher caliber than many of the touring rock bands on the road today.

While Mr. Big made it good with radio airplay of ballads back in the day, they are far more than just a ballads band. This band rocks hard and puts on a real show for all in attendance. There aren’t many rock bands with the musical ability and talent that Mr. Big brings to the table. Paul Gilbert has impressive speed and can deliver the goods as a guitar hero any day of the week. Besides Mr. Big, Gilbert plays in the band Racer X and really shows off his electrifying solos. With the passing of great guitarists like Randy Rhoads and Edward Van Halen, you’re not likely to see or hear too many guys with this level of mastery of guitar skills with the exception of a few guys like Satriani, Vai, and George Lynch.
Check out Paul Gilbert’s solo which starts at 5:07 in this clip!
Speaking of Van Halen…When David Lee Roth went solo and split from Van Halen, he wanted the best musicians he could find and for bass, he chose none other than Billy Sheehan. If you’ve ever witnessed the bass solos of Billy Sheehan you know exactly why he was chosen too.
