Tony Martin – Thorns (Review)

Ex-Black sabbath Vocalist Vocalist Tony Martin Takes No Prisoners With New Album

Artist: Tony Martin
Album: Thorns
Genre: Heavy Metal
Label: Dark Star/MVD/Sony/Universal
Release Date: January 14, 2022

While Black Sabbath may have called it quits, former vocalist Tony Martin sure hasn’t and that’s evident from the first notes of “As The World Burns”. I don’t give out 5 Star Reviews very often, but clearly, Tony Martin has earned every one of them on this spectacular album. To say I was shocked at how good this album is would be an understatement. Black Sabbath was the masters of metal and I really liked the albums with Martin at the helm like Eternal Idol, Headless Cross, Tyr, and Cross Purposes.

What Martin has done on this new solo album “Thorns” is damn near on par with his output for Black Sabbath during his tenure.  To me, this is a simply amazing feat by itself.  To think that Martin can create an album of this magnitude without the likes of Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler is simply astounding. This album features some incredible songs like “Damned By You”, “Black Widow Angel”, “As The World Burns”, “Passion Killer” and the haunting title track “Thorns”. Lyrically and vocally Tony sounds as good as ever on this album and the finished product comes as close to being an epic album as it gets.

Musically, there are great moments throughout, and it runs the gambit from haunting and dark to energetic and full-on in your face heavy metal. For the record, this is only Tony’s third full-length solo album and it’s truly a defining and accomplished moment in a long and great career.

I cannot recommend that you buy and listen to this album enough. “Thorns” is destined to be atop the best metal albums of 2022. Any metal fan would be hard-pressed to find a better album these days, it’s really that good.
