Q & A With ZFG

Q & A With ZFG
XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Josh: We are getting all geared up to go out on our first ever tour together, supporting Adelitas Way across the US. We’re stoked, it’s going to be a lot of fun!

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

Josh: I think we started writing and recording the odd track here and there in January last year (2018), more or less just for fun, then I think we made it official in August 2018! So we haven’t been a band long, but for me personally, the musicianship in this band and how easy Trev, Sam and Jules make it to play with, it sounds like we’ve been jamming for years. It’s a complete pleasure!

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

Trev: For this band, we all had our own projects going on at the time we first got in the studio. Josh and I are roommates and I kept saying to him, “We didn’t meet just to be roommates bro” Josh and I hit it off at first hang when we met a couple years back. His playing is insane and he knew about me and my old music. Sam and I grew up together and we were fresh off of a tour playing with Diamante which was the first time Sam and I ever played together which was crazy it took that long. I kept bumping into Jules everywhere and his vocals are just out of this world but he’d never been in a rock style band. He’s a soul, pop R&B singer that just happens to have an Axl Rose and Robert Plant top end that personally tightened my pants haha.

All of our projects at that time really didn’t showcase what we were all separately capable of. I wanted to play crazy riffs and rip some guitar solos. Josh wanted to let loose behind the kit and play some real rock music. I personally wanted Jules to really show his range and Sam to bring that groove that’s imbedded in his blood. We said “No commitment, unless we need to commit.” ZFG is what we called our first session day. It wasn’t forced. We had a blast. We developed our own sound right away. The universe spoke and here we are.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Jules: I love both for different reasons. Writing new songs and recording is amazing for creativity, whereas performing is a very unique way to connect with people.
Josh: Yeah I Agree, playing live is a feeling that is unparalleled, being up on a stage playing music is a blessing, yet being in the studio and creating some magic is such a different and as fulfilling feeling too! Cant choose between the two haha.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

Trev: We as ZFG are about to go on our first tour as a band together but my latest tour story would be when I recently played Life is Beautiful Festival in Vegas with What So Not and we went to an after party of who I won’t say where this girl was sitting on the floor in a skirt and decided to rip her tampon out and throw it across the floor in our direction. Needless to say she had many tastes along with most drugs you can think of. I can also tell you I haven’t ordered a Bloody Mary since. It was by far the most out there thing I’ve seen anyone do at an after party or in public in general. That’s Vegas for you.

Jules: we’ll make sure we have some after our first tour this spring!

Josh: I think Trev has us all beat on this one.. wow!
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Josh: Honestly I get some weird and strange requests daily on social media.. most people are pretty chill, recently there’s been a few ladies who have asked to have a threesome with me and my girlfriend, Holly. (Holly doesn’t seem too keen.. haha) Mostly though it’s just people asking me to send them naked pictures. We live in a strange world where I guess that is the norm. :/

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Jules: my parents have always been supportive of my dreams. My dad loves the band, my mom… is not so into heavy rock music lol.

Josh: Yeah my parents from an early age always encouraged me to pursue music, but they never pushed me or forced me which I’m grateful for. They had to put up with me smashing the hell out of a drum kit in a small house in England from the age of 4 till I moved out so they deserve an award for that! haha.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Trev: Our tune Saturday Night is one of my faves to play live which we recorded for our EP. It’s a feel good, loud, party anthem. Also a new song we just wrote and put together called “Not Today” Its just face melting. I can’t wait to play that on tour.

Jules: I also love to play Saturday Night. It’s one of those songs that I get to flow with. It goes by so fast cause I’m enjoying myself so much. One of the new ones for me would be a track called “Inside”. It’s a bit more on the sensitive side and I love how we all sing on the chorus. Can’t wait to record that one!!

Josh: Saturday night is a seriously fun tune, I love playing a song called ‘Just a man’. Sam and I get to really groove on this, in a different way to the other songs, it’s more RnB focussed on our end.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Trev: Toto. Best musicians in the world and it just so happens that it’s Sam and my Pops band. They were the best of the best musicians who played on everyone’s hit records as well as make their own hit records. The inspiration growing up was endless. They are a big inspiration to all of us ZFG boys.

Jules: Toto is definitely one of the greatest. The list is long on my end, but the first one was this french Rock Star “Johnny Hallyday”. I was 5 when I my dad took me to his concert and when Johnny and I exchanged some thumbs up, I knew I wanted to be like him haha. He’s the guy who brought American music to France and was my first taste of the blues and Elvis Presley and such. And then, there’s of couse MJ… the greatest entertainer of all!

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Josh: Can you imagine touring with Foo Fighters and Rage Against The Machine? I have tooooo many bands that I love, most would probably be too heavy for us, but still who knows, one day!

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Trev: Getting my first Gold Record. I wrote a song on Halestorm’s debut album. I grew up seeing plaques on my Pop’s wall and to get one with my name on it was a trip. Now, I just gotta get one with ZFG on it.

Jules: creating ZFG with the boys of course!!

Josh: For me, playing 3 sold out nights at Wembley Stadium in the UK was a genuine dream come true. I think that’s around 85,000 people a night or something crazy like that. I grew up in England and that’s easily one of the most iconic stadiums in sport and in the music world, can’t wait to do it again!
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Jules: Architect. You can combine all kinds of arts into a 3 dimensional space. I find it fascinating.

Josh: I always get asked this, when I was a kid I always wanted to be in a band, so I never had a Plan B. I would definitely have loved to do something with Cars and motorsport though.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Trev: Ernie Ball/Music Man Strings and guitars.
Bogner Shiva amp.
Line 6 pedals.
Josh: Mapex Drums, Paiste Cymbals, Vater Sticks, Gibraltar Hardware, Roland and AKG!

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Josh: It’s funny, I think the mainstream market these days is mainly rap, trap and urban music which is rad, and they get some serious love, people are freaking out over it all. A lot of it goes straight over my head but I think I’m just getting old! Im a big UK grime and older rap fan, I’m slowly getting more into today’s scene. But there’s rock bands creeping in and achieving great things like Greta Van Fleet and Bring Me The Horizon. So I’m excited to get our music out into the world and who knows, maybe even collaborate with some of these new killer artists!

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Trev: That my second love other than music is Yoga. I’m a spiritual person, not religious. Yoga really opens your spiritual side. It centers you as well as builds you physically. I couldn’t touch my toes before and had the serious guitar player posture even worse than what I have now haha It gives you even more mental strength to know you can really accomplish so many things you thought you couldn’t. It really changed my life for the better.

Josh: I do a lot of mixed martial arts. Like Trev with his Yoga, I found something that was grounding and strangely peaceful. I feel you learn a lot about yourself when taking on any form of martial art or combat sports, weather it’s traditional martial arts, or MMA or even boxing. For me it actually helps me off the mat too, it’s a mindset and a way of life. It can be applied to everything you do, not just in a physical way but just the way you approach everything in your head. It’s like a game of chess. Plus the thrill of actually sparring and fighting is something I really enjoy.

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

Josh: It’s not just rock, it grooves it’s technical but it’s catchy and melodic. One of my friends who never listens to rock, calls it Sexy rock.. I like that!!! haha
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Trev: Thank you! Thank you for keeping rock alive! Can’t wait to hang and meet as many of you as possible. The party has just begun.
