Q & A With Vanilla Sugar

Q & A With Vanilla Sugar

XS ROCK: So tell me a little about the latest news:

Hi! Thank you for having me!! Things are going well; I just wrapped up a Texas tour and I am now back in the studio working on new music!

XS ROCK: Growing up, how did music enter your life?

My dad is a musician and I always admired him while growing up (still do, Dad! Love you!) he always played in bands as well. I started sitting in during his piano lessons when I was 4 and my love for playing music grew from there.

XS ROCK:  How did you come up with your band name? There are two versions…the PG 13 version is that the name “Vanilla Sugar” sounds sweet and innocent when the music is actually raw and in your face. The X rated version (the 100% honest version) is this… I wanted to create an alias that was me but not obviously my name. My nickname has always been “JPVanilla”, hence the first part of “Vanilla Sugar”. The second is a play on words for the term “Kitty Sugar”…feel free to google that when you’re not at work. Adding the two together created Vanilla Sugar!

XS ROCK:  How do you get into the headspace of creating your music?

Most of the lyrics I write come from a dark place – music is my release. I’ve noticed that I have to put myself back into that headspace to record the tracks. It just doesn’t sound right until I do.

XS ROCK:  What kinds of art and culture inspire your own art?

I was inspired to write music because music saved my life! I was incredibly depressed growing up (as a lot of us were ) and discovered the band, Korn. The lyrics really hit me back then and made me feel like I wasn’t alone in feeling the way I do. I hope to help others discover that they aren’t alone as well.

XS ROCK: How has where you’re from influenced the artist you’ve become?

I am originally from Texas! A lot of people tell me that’s why I am nice and friendly. Haha.

XS ROCK: What do you think separates metal/punk/hard rock from any other genre? What makes it unique to you?

I just love how raw and heavy everything is. You can feel it. The lyrics can be unfiltered and in your face.

XS ROCK:  How do you step back and relax after a performance or a period of intense work? How do you escape?

I love to have a cuddle session with my dog, Coco. She relieves my stress and anxiety!

XS ROCK: Finally, what’s your plan for the year, what can our readers expect?

My new single will be released in a few months! This new song is totally different from anything I’ve released before. I’m very happy with it and excited to share it with everyone. I am also working on my debut album, called, “She”. It’s been a long time in the making. It will be out in Jan 2020. The music is a combination of high energy- dark and creepy synths topped with a floating, haunting vocal.  I have a Texas tour planned in January in the US, starting in Texas and ending in California. I am looking forward to each city!
