Q & A With Trout

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Trout: We’re playing a pretty big local show here in Detroit with Chapstik in December 28th. They’ve been around for quite sometime but they also haven’t been together for years so this is a reunion show for them.

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

Trout: Our two year anniversary was a week ago on December 3rd.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

Trout:It’s something I feel like we all have to do. Simply the best medicine for anything.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Trout: It really depends on where we are as a band. We’ve been slacking on the writing aspect lately but that’s okay because we have a new album out to promote. But to answer the question, both!

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

Trout: We haven’t been out on the road yet but we’re getting ready to. We just bought our first tour vehicle.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Trout: We’ve gotten lots of requests to play all sorts of weird covers. Someone once asked us to cover freeze frame. We’re not going to do that.

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?

Trout: Of course! We all come from musical families.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Trout: We have a lot of fun playing “Mean Woman Algonac Blues” it’s a long one, but the middle part is always Interesting to see what’s gonna happen because we sorta free form jam.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Trout: Speaking on behalf of the whole band, groups like Deep Purple, Taste, Blue Cheer, and The James Gang inspire the music we make.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Trout: This doesn’t make any sense, but it would be The Beatles, John Coltrane, and Black Sabbath

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Trout:We just put out a full length album. This is something none of us have ever done before.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Trout: Well, all of us have careers. Kyle G and I (Peter) are both union masons and Kyle S just graduated College. It would be nice to have a career in music someday.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Peter: I switch back and fourth between a Gibson Les Paul and Gibson SG. My amp is a Peavey Classic 50 Head ran through a 2×12 Sunn cabinet. Kyle G: I have a newer Rickenbaker 4003 and I use a fender rumble 500 head ran through a 1970 Fender bassman cab and some times a 2×15 Sunn cab. Kyle S: I play a five piece Gretsch kit with Sabian cymbals and a DW 3000 kick pedal.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Trout: Here in Detroit, we are very fortunate to the point where sometimes it can feel unfortunate. But overall, lots of good bands.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Trout: They would probably be surprised to know we are all self taught musicians and the fact that we hardly ever practice!

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

Trout: We do have that throwback 70s hard rock and blues sound. I fee like we do it justice and breath new life into an old craze.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Trout: Nothing that hasn’t been said on social media or by word of mouth. But to anyone new reading this, go on and check it out!
