Q & A With The Whirlings

Q & A With The Whirlings

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
The Whirlings: We will be touring around Italy in December and across Europe in spring to promote our new album Earthshine

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?
The Whirlings: we’ve been playing together for over 10 years …

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?
The Whirlings: we play mainly for our pleasure, for the pleasure of jamming together across psychedelic and stoner sounds and also creating something new that may also like to the audience

XS ROCK: What is your music background?
The Whirlings: beyond classic psychedelic rock, influences such as stoner rock, space rock, and post-rock have been fundamental to develop our sound

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
The Whirlings: A strong whirling or vortex opening a black hole towards other dimensions

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?
The Whirlings: First of all, we would like to play more shows outside of Italy, because many of our fans are from other countries. But we are also continuing our exploration of new sounds and music languages for our next album.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
The Whirlings: We love to test and literally shape our new songs during live shows and jams. Actually for our kind of sound, the live is the moment when we manage to share and give the best, of course, it doesn’t always happen, but if it happens then it can really get us and the people there somewhere… But of course in order to get there, you need to have fresh material that you really feel like playing and improvising with and besides that, it’s always inspiring and fun to work on the new stuff together.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
The Whirlings: Among of all our songs, only one has got vocals, the text is by Vera Claps and speaks of …. void!

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?
The Whirlings: The groove!

Q & A With The WhirlingsXS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
The Whirlings: The real outrage is what fate holds for us every time we move altogether. I can only tell you that very often storms, blizzards and things like that anticipate our arrival at the concert venue. So be prepared for when we come to the USA.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
The Whirlings: One of them wanted another cd because he said that the one he had bought was empty… (see our fist cd and you’ll understand)

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?
The Whirlings: Of course, the support of our families and friends is, has been, and will always be fundamental! Even if most of our parents wouldn’t listen to our stuff J

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?
The Whirlings: always believe stubbornly in their own music even when everything seems against them

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
The Whirlings: Lost in Whiteout and Reverence among the new ones, and of course the good old Calcutta’s Sewers

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
The Whirlings: our name comes from a song by Dead Meadow, we have been following their music and their live shows for years and they have inspired us a lot, especially the perfect blend of vintage and contemporary styles that makes their sound unique.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
The Whirlings: Playing across south-east Asia with Dead Meadow, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Colour Haze!

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
The Whirlings: The fact that after more than 10 years we still love to make music together and share the same tastes and visions

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
The Whirlings: Astronauts!

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
The Whirlings: we use two guitars with many effects, one bass guitar, two synths, and the drums

Q & A With The WhirlingsXS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
The Whirlings: the mainstream scene is increasingly commercial and aimed at profit, and in the end, it all sounds the same…. the underground scene, on the other hand, is always abuzz and full of new ideas and very good bands! It’s really worth investing in and supporting it!

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
The Whirlings: Maybe that we are all self-taught and we have not studied music!

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
The Whirlings: To let us know what they think about Earthshine, we love to receive their feedback. And also be ready because the next stuff we are working on will be crazy shit!

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS ROCK!
The Whirlings: Thanks to you for your attention!
