Q & A With Shawn Perry

Q & A With Shawn Perry

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Shawn Perry: We just dropped a new and Lawnchair and rad new music video for it and we will be hitting the studio at the end of the summer to cut a few more for y’all.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

Shawn Perry: Since 2015 although Corey Linden and myself have been playing together since 2010

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

Shawn Perry: I am a maniac that likes to wear ridiculous clothes and command seas of humans like Freddy Mercury… Maybe one day I will dye my stash’ black and take it to the next level, I already have white pants and lots of capes.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Shawn Perry: Well my background is pretty extensive, I have been singing and performing ever since I can remember. I started playing guitar and drums when I was ten. I was involved in choir, Concert Band, Jazz Band, Show Choir and did a lot of musical theater in high school. I have been “playing out” with my own music since I was 13 and have been teaching music since I was 20. Full bio and rundown on my web site http://www.shawnperry.country

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Shawn Perry: Glitter, Sparkles, Good Times and whoopin’ Ass

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

Shawn Perry: …well the main goal is always just progress, but we are really hoping to land a label and a decent tour for next year, I would love to do an arena show or many lol

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Shawn Perry: 100% performing. I don’t particularly enjoy the hammering process of the studio … I use to be a full-time music producer and I got tired of all of the screwdriver work. I like to have the finished product and getting to perform it to folks who are amped up and ready for it-

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Shawn Perry: No… but do try to make every song tell a story. Our latest single Lawnchair is about a desperately needed vacation…which I do… Lord help me I do.

and we have other songs about just about everything you can imagine: Love, Hate, Hooking up, Breaking up, addiction, perseverance, …you name it all of the usual lyrical tropes… but no matter how serious the subject it is usually presented with a wink and smile…in a way that makes you enjoy the song while it plays … but makes go a dig a little deeper once you pick up the liner notes and start reading the lyrics…to quote Mary Poppins “A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down” …that’s always been my approach to dealing with tough subjects in my lyrics.

.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

Shawn Perry: Having a good time, and not taking any S#!+ ….people are always trying to pull something-

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.

Shawn Perry: …Man, that would be an entire interview all by itself, Most of my crazy tour stories (of which there are MANY) don’t really involve me they involve random people that I encountered on the road. So here is a good one …One time I was on a tour that was bands and skaters. One of the skaters snorted a bunch of Dramamine… he spent the rest of the making out the wall and talking about getting probed by aliens and how pandas should not have to pay taxes…that was weird-

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Shawn Perry: have been asked to sign butts and breasts on more than on occasion… by men and women lol. I just laugh about it and do it… I feel like if this makes that person’s day… great…grand…terrific- I also had a girl steal my underwear once…it was super weird-

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

Shawn Perry: Yeah it’s kind of been my thing since I was in middle school. My wife played bass in my metal band for like five years… so she gets it. People used to do all kinds of weird ass stuff to her to so she usually just laughs when I have so crazy story, she has seen it all…

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

Shawn Perry: Write Great songs, Don’t skimp on recording or music videos, Get the best of the best. Its better so eat bologna and dollar store cereal and save our pennies to “Do it right” that put out something that is not world class. Putting out an amazing single is better than doing a whole record done on the cheap-

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Shawn Perry: Lawnchair, Country Girls and a few songs that we have not released yet Slow Jam, Basic and Hard-Rock Hillbilly

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Shawn Perry: I was really into Michael Jackson and Van-Halen when I was little; however the day I decided that I wanted to be a singer for REAL was the day that I discovered Queen…. Which I know, I know…that’s the thing to say these days…it kind of pisses me off since Bohemian Rhapsody was such a big movie last year so now that probably seems like some sort of rehearsed answer….but I was on the Queen train ever since I was like 11…That’s always been, MY BAND.  My brother had Queen albums in the house when I was little but I kind of ignored them at the time it wasn’t until I saw the song Bohemian Rhapsody in the Wayne’s world movie and subsequently saw the music video God knows how many times played in MTV for the next 3 months… That’s what really made me want to be a singer in a rock band and a whop-ass, guitar player. the other big contributors at the time to really solidifying that life decision would be the Van Halen album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, Metallica’s Black album, Stone Temple Pilots’ Core, and The Black Crowes album, The Southern Harmonic and Musical Companion… I think even to this day if you’re familiar with that source material you can hear it influencing just about everything I write-

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Shawn Perry: …me and my band..obviously…Queen, Van-Halen (with Sammy) P!nk, Halestorm, Joan Jett, Naughty by Nature, The Darkness, Brad Paisley and Foo Fighters.

I mean who would not want to go see that- Endless Summer/Endless Party Tour

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Shawn Perry: Not getting arrested 🙂 …IDK one of my heroes Matt Pinfield sent me a message the other day saying he loved my new single… that’s pretty great-

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Shawn Perry: Actor …which have done a bit of being the new “Steve Irwin”…I love animals so much it’s crazy I’ve even gone in the cage with full-grown lions and tigers before because I’m clearly a deranged crazy person…But truth be told I am hellbent on being in a Star Wars movie … that’s gonna happen- (pulls out lightsaber  ….starts twirling)

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Shawn Perry: There is a music scene? Really? Where?

…in all honesty, it’s tough out there right now. Live music venues are closing left and right. We have worked REALLY hard to be to go and do shows as an “original” band and still get paid. That’s not an easy row to hoe, most places won’t even have you is you are not doing cover songs.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Shawn Perry: I am the UPMAC Karate asocial National champion for Self Defense and Sparring 2018

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Shawn Perry: We just released and new single Lawnchair and RAD music video for it

https://youtu.be/v5cXT4X5-Go The song is just a blast, I hope all of you readers dig it!

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS ROCK!
