Q & A With Quin Koldan From Dark Below

Q & A With Quin Koldan From Dark Below
XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Quin Koldan: We are currently writing for a new EP coming out early next year, which we are all extremely excited about, as well as working on booking shows for next year to support the EP release as well!
XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?
Quin Koldan: I’ve only been in the band for nearly 3 years, but the band started in 2012-2013.
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?
Quin Koldan: I saw Green Day play ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ on the TV when it first came out, I think I was 10. I was amazed, and started writing on my own and liked it a lot, since then I’ve been playing music and always wanted to be in a band.
XS ROCK: What is your music background?
Quin Koldan: I started drum lessons at 10 or 11, and my teacher has these student orchestras since he taught a lot of different instruments, and that’s where I learned to read music. Later on I moved states and had a different teacher, and learned a fair bit of jazz drumming through his lessons as well as reinforcing fundamentals.
XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
Quin Koldan: That’s a tough question, since not only is music subjective in an of itself for the most part but the image you see when you hear something is also relative to the listener. We were all influenced heavily by the early 2000s hard rock acts such as Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle. So to me, our music has an image of the dark, and grunge influenced rock with a  modern flair to it.
XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?
Quin Koldan: Current goals for one would definitely getting our new EP finished and released! We’re all really excited about the songs we’re writing for it and can’t wait to play them live! Another goal would be a substantial tour to bring our music to as many people as possible.
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Quin Koldan: I know we all like to play live a whole lot, I mean the feeling you get when you play live for an audience is amazing; and while the guitarist (Josh Campbell) and I like writing, I do like recording a lot as well.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Quin Koldan: Another tough question. What a song’s lyrics are about or what they mean to someone can change from person to person, I mean that the cool thing about music I think. But a few themes we write about are faith, knowing when to walk away, or standing up for yourself.
XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?
Quin Koldan: The answer will change depending on what inspires a musician I think. But I think a pretty universally important moment among musicians, and artists in general really, is when your art makes a connection with the audience. The audience can be just one person talking to you about what you created or a whole crowd listening to your songs, but when you see that light click on and they relate to what you’re saying with your art, that’s what makes it all worth the effort, and that’s what’s most important to me.
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Quin Koldan: Haven’t had a really strange request yet! The closest thing has been signing various body parts.
XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?
Quin Koldan: My family is incredibly supportive. Since I was little and just starting to learn they did what they could to foster it and without them I probably would not have gotten as far as I have. I will say though, choosing to this with your life, being a musician and playing out, it shows you who your real friends are.
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Quin Koldan: I love playing Halo live, as well as Deny.
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Quin Koldan: For me, that was Green Day. A lot of bands continue to inspire me even today to keep going and play as much as possible, but seeing Green Day perform was the first one for me. As a kid I loved their attitude and their music just clicked for me.
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Quin KoldanSevendustLullwater and Chevelle. The guys in Lullwater are amazing musicians and fun to be around, and Sevendust and Chevelle are bands I’ve always wanted to play with.
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Quin Koldan: One accomplishment I’m really proud of is selling out a venue with our friends in The Many-Colored Death. We co-headlined the show and it was a blast to perform to a full crowd!
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Quin Koldan: I honestly don’t know. I’d probably be a chef, I’ve found I enjoy cooking a lot.
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Quin Koldan: My drumset is a Dixon, but my snare is a DW collector’s series. My kick-pedal is a Gibraltar as well as some of my stands. The other stands are PDPs and my cymbals are all Zildjian.
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Quin Koldan: I think there’s a lot more to it now. With social media now being a thing, there’s more to being in a band than just recording good songs and bringing a good show wherever you play. People see more sides of you, and I think as an entertainer it can be a double-edged sword and something to be aware of.
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Quin Koldan: Even though I play drums in the band I self-taught myself guitar as long as I’ve been playing drums, and took piano lessons as a kid and in college.
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Quin Koldan: I just want to say thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this interview, to everyone who reads it and everyone who listens to our music and gives their support. Without you all we can’t do what we love doing, so we’re grateful for all the fans out there!
