Q & A With Neil Whittington Vocalist For NewClue

Q & A With Neil Whittington Vocalist For New Clue

Sure, we all have our bumps in life, but NewClue has been through the trenches. As formed in the very late 80’s, (and after about 6 years) all disbursed and went their separate ways. Neil (the vocalist) almost died, when he slammed his motorcycle into a telephone pole back in 2000. With TBI, he had to learn to walk & talk (as well as sing) all over again. With the reformation of yesteryear’s “NoClue”, the band rejoined into today’s “NewClue”. The guys came back, full circle. Neil’s heartwarming story, and his willingness to never give up on a dream, fueled the fire and sparked the embers for pure passion and the love for music.  “Here is the reason that he lived and what they have to give…”

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Neil: We are a “writing & recording project”. New projects and/or shows are all based on sales of our EP. If it goes well, then we go tour. We did our gigging in clubs when we were “No Clue”. It was lots of fun! We drew BIG crowds.  Today we are focusing on getting out to the world’s ears. We are in rotation on many Internet Radio stations & shows. The largest is “The 365 Radio Network”. They have our songs in rotation on their 22 stations. Plus others (Radio WIGWAM in the UK, Digital Revolution Radio, Kool Rock Radio and many more). Plus many radio shows have us in rotation (WHJY’s – “Sound Check” in Providence RI, “Ralph’s Music of the World” out of Australia, “Liege of Cookies”, “Rock Candy Radio Show” and many others). You can also find us on some college radio stations or any Music Streaming sites (SoundCloud, SoundClick, ReverbNation, NumberOneMusic, MusicClout .com & etc). Anyone can Google search us out & find MANY sites and internet radio stations to hear us.

With members that are also members of other bands and focuses in life, you get to hear the best of us. Of course there were multiple changes of the players throughout the years but the current line-up of “New Clue” is the best of what was “No Clue” at one time.  Our drummer Joe is active in a band called “Holy Diver” – A Tribute to Ronnie James Dio. They gig almost every weekend. We recommend you check them out… Google them!

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

Neil: As formed in the very late 80’s and playing clubs all over New England until the mid 90’s, “New Clue” was called “No Clue” back in the day. After about 6 or 7 years, we went our separate ways. We then found each other on Facebook & reformed in 2014.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

Neil: For me (Neil), I am 57 years old. This is my last ditch effort to become a “Rock Star”. I wiped out on my motorcycle in August 2000. Wound up in the hospital for ½ a year with TBI. With a couple more years of therapy, I had to learn to walk & talk (as well as sing) all over again. With the reformation the band came back, full circle. Neil’s heartwarming story and his willingness to never give up on a dream, fueled the fire and sparked the embers for pure passion and the love for music… Here is the reason that he lived and what they have to give.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Neil: We each have our own story but I (Neil) started on piano at the age of 4. At 57, I have been in Rock bands throughout all of my life. In the early 80’s I sang for a band called “Messiah” in CA. We did all the Hollywood  clubs (Trubidor, Gazzari’s, Whiskey a Go Go, Roxie & etc). After my wipe out, I tried to get back to life so we reformed “No Clue” into “New Clue”.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Neil: We are NOSTALGIC METAL REBORN with a New Clue. Metal that was BIG when AC/DC, Iron Maiden, QueensRyche, Led Zeppelin & more where in your ears. With a new twist (Short intros… BANG into the song). We had to cut out all of the intros to make them more “Today”.

XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)

Neil: Sell millions of our EP and hope that the world catches a “NewClue”. In hopes of them wanting us on tour then back into the studio for more.

XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?

Neil: Survival! Hoping enough of the world catches a New Clue soon. Which begets becoming “Rock Stars”.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Neil: We each long to play out for large concert venues but putting out great music and getting it to the world’s ears is our focus. With our drummer Joe in “Holy Diver”, they gig almost every weekend. We recommend you check them out… Google them!

Q & A With Neil Whittington Vocalist For New ClueXS ROCK: What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Neil: Various… Each has its own theme.

#1 > The title track “Mystic Winds” is based on a novel that our drummer Joe released last year. He is a paranormal investigatormusician, talk show host, and author. He has embarked on a lifelong journey exploring the unknown, uncovering hidden truths, in pursuit of the most sought-after question – Is There Life After Death? His latest book  Mystic Winds is fresh off the press and ready for you… Here is a sneak peak!!!

It’s about a challenge between good and evil, and the choices we make, which ultimately determines our fate. ‘Mystic Winds’ sympathizes with the weakness of human vulnerability, and the consequences for the decisions made. ‘Mystic Winds’ takes place in a unique town, where only those invited are permitted to enter. It’s a modern day version

#2 > “Hail to the King (Henry VIII)” is about the life of King Henry VIII. His 6 wives & their lives and beheadings… It’s all in there.

#3 > “Homeless” is about homeless people/families.

#4 > “Illustrious Youth” is a take on something like J.R.R. Tolkien would write.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

Neil: Back when I (Neil) was in a band called “Messiah” in Hollywood (1980’s), we were getting BIG! We had a Friday night headline show at “The Whiskey a Go Go”. We had 2 busloads of people brought in from our stomping grounds (Riverside/San Bernardino). We had Record Company A&R reps accepted invitations from our Cassettes that we had sent them, all going to the show… Then I was pulled over for speeding on the way there. I had tickets form the past that were unpaid so they threw me in jail. I never got to the gig. That was the end of “Messiah” for me so I went to the other side of the continent, New England. Shortly after, I joined “No Clue”.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Neil: “Can you guys play any country?”

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?

Neil: Yes… always have been.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Neil: “Illustrious Youth”

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Neil: For me (Neil) it was Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin & later in life Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. He has a 6 octave range and powerful as hell.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Neil: Yester-year’s bands in our genre … “Iron Maiden”, “Queensryche” “AC/DC” etc.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Neil: I (Neil), living through my accident & reformation of “NewClue”. Now I am trying to make this EP my/our greatest accomplishment.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Neil: I (Neil) do have a GREAT day job… I design submarines at Electric Boat http://gdeb.com/  Have been there  for 14 years. With “NewClue” I hope we put out more & go-go-go.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Neil: I (Neil) sing out of an Sure- SM58. We have a PA system but most venues provide. Will has multiple guitars as does Brian have multiple basses. I really don’t know what brand Joe’s kit is, he just beats it well!

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Neil: We did our gigging in clubs when we were “NoClue”. When it was lots of fun! We drew BIG crowds.  Today, we are a “writing & recording project”. You get to hear the best of us. With members that are also members of other bands and focuses in life. Like Joe in “Holy Diver”. They gig almost every weekend.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Neil: That we are still putting out some awesome music J

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

Neil: We are NOSALGIC METAL REBORN with a NewClue

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Neil: If you are into NOSALGIC METAL, come catch a NewClue at http://newclue.band/

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XSRock!

Neil: Thanks for having us!
