Q & A With Kevin Michael, Drummer For City Of Tyrants

Q & A With Kevin Michael, Drummer For City Of Tyrants

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

We have a new album titled “Revelations” coming out on 11/16/18. It will be available everywhere including Spotify, Itunes, Google Music, and Amazon.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

The bands have been together for about 3 years now.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

We are all lifelong musicians and wanted to start a project where we could really be ourselves and write the music we wanted to hear. Our main goal has always been to have fun with it and not to let it become a job, per se.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

We all have different backgrounds. Some of us are self-taught and others professionally trained. We all had that moment at a young age where we heard a band for the first time and instantly got motivated to pick up an instrument. We grew up listening to classic rock like Led Zepplin, 80’s metal, Metallica, Ozzy, Guns N Roses etc.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

I think the songs on “Revelations” convey a lot of different images. We left it open to interpretation for the listeners but you could say its indicative of the current state of politics and our own personal experiences. We thought of it like writing a movie script and just has fun with it.

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

Our current goal is to hit the road playing these new songs live early 2019.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Both have their advantages. Live shows are always fun and there’s nothing like seeing a crowd respond to something you wrote. On the other hand, writing music is very cathartic and its a great outlet. We love taking the time to write our songs the way we want to hear them.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

The new album “Revelations” is a concept album told from a first-person perspective. It is essentially a story of a man chosen to be a hero type figure in what we imagined to be a post-apocalyptic world. Throughout the story, he is questioning his own ideology and in battle with himself, fighting his urges to become the evil he initially sought to eradicate. Lyrically, it’s pretty dark.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

Being able to express ourselves freely and building great relationships with fans and other people in the community.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

If so, please fill us in. We haven’t toured yet so we’re hoping to get on the road in 2019 to support our new album.

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

Definitely! Our families have been very supportive. Our parents played a big part in our musical upbringing.

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

Never limit yourself! Always try new things and don’t be afraid to let your sound evolve.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

We’re having a lot of fun practicing Astral Projection and NARAKA this week. We’ll be performing them live in a couple of months

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Everyone in the band has a slightly different background. To name a few bands I’ll say Metallica, Pantera, Fear Factory, Guns N Roses, Iron Maiden, Led Zepplin. I think we turned to music because it provided an outlet and allowed us to be creative. It’s really important when you’re young to find that one thing you’re great at and working to master that craft as you get older.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

We always say we’d love to tour with Meshuggah! I think if you added Dream Theater to the bill, our guitarist  Chingkhei, would die a happy man!

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far? Our greatest accomplished so far was completing our new album ‘Revelations’ It was a challenge but we had a lot of fun with it and grew so much both as a band and individually.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

This questions always funny to me because we all have full-time jobs. Jobs that allow us to fund all of our musical endeavors on our own as an unsigned band. I think we all wish music was paying the bills so we could quit our day jobs! Haha

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Mapex drums, Meinl cymbals, Ibanez and Jackson guitars, Dingwall basses. Our guitarists are currently using Peavey 6505 heads and Peavey cabs.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

I think its great! There are so many new bands coming out doing new and interesting things. With all of the streaming platforms now its so easy to find great new stuff to listen to.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

This is a tough one. We all have very eclectic tastes in music. I think people would be surprised to know some of us are fans of genres like hip hop & pop. Our guitarist Chingkhei listens to Indian polymeter music and a few of us love jazz and fusion.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Thank you to everyone who supports us and has taken the time to listen to our new album!
