Q & A With Kevin Connelly From Iron Age Mystics

Q & A With Kevin Connelly From Iron Age Mystics

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Kevin: Our debut CD is coming out right now in four parts until the final release date May 19, 2019.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

Kevin: 10 years in various forms.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

Kevin: From when I was a kid, I knew that music could reach people in ways that nothing else could. I wanted to reach people in those ways.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Kevin: The lead singer, lyricist, and songwriter for New Regime; Son Of The Sun (solo); Burn (solo double disc); Life On Mars; Mercuretto; and Iron Age Mystics.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Kevin: I’ll give you a quote about what my or really IAM’s music conveys.

“Kickass rock ‘n roll in the truest and dirtiest tradition. Where strains redolent of Creedence, Aerosmith & U2 collide with a band of conscious revolutionaries. Just the right kind of original angry…at the right time of epochal shift!”
Sacha Stone / Founder Humanitad

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

Kevin: To live to fight another day and maybe change the world in a better way.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Kevin: I don’t prefer, although each discipline requires a different mindset. I love them all.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Kevin: The title track, “Pride Before The Fall,” addresses the destructive nature of blind patriotism, amidst other things. “Information Outlaw” is a tip of the hat to whistle blowers. “Thought Police” is a dark, Orwellian song about the rise of the surveillance state. “Big, Bad Motherfucker” is a tongue-in-cheek shot at corporate greed (probably the closest this record gets to being humorous). Both “Down Deep” and “You’ve Got The Power” are calls / anthems for unity and universal brotherhood. The themes are 100% social, political and spiritual.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

Kevin: Being a creative professional and keeping my head while all those around me are losing theirs.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

Kevin: Here’s one of many. While on tour with New Regime, I failed to make the morning ‘road call’ so those bastards (I say that with love) left me stranded in Winnipeg. I had to make my own way to the next city for the gig.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Kevin: Fans camped out on my parents’ lawn. No shit.

Q & A With Kevin Connelly From Iron Age MysticsXS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

Kevin: Overall yes. Some more than others. It’s not everyone’s cup-of-tea to understand the passion of my artistry, but I love them just the same.

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

Kevin: Do it for the love of your budding craft and never stop doing it. It’ll help keep you sane in an ever increasingly insane world.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Kevin: “What Ya Gonna Do About It?” might be one but we’ve never performed it live. As of today my choice would be “You’ve Got The Power.” It’s the song that never fails to grab them by the heart. Second choice would be “Pride Before The Fall.”

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Kevin: That’s a very broad question for a man who’s been alive as long as I have. If I had to name one artist it would be Bowie.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Kevin: I wouldn’t make it a tour, I’d make it a festival that lasted for about three weeks. Everyone who taught me anything about music would be on the bill. Janis Joplin, The Beatles, Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Bowie, The Who, Aerosmith, Rush, Nirvana, NIN, etc. It would be glorious…

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Kevin: Once upon a time at a gig out in western Canada, our road manager introduced me to a young man who only wanted to talk to me for a minute. The guy told me that, months before, he had broken up with the love of his life and was driving around all night, out of his mind and was contemplating suicide. What turned him around was that he heard one of my songs on the radio about the very same thing he was going through and the gentle message got through to him, maybe saved his life. He then shook my hand and left. I was humbled by his bravery. This is the power of music.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Kevin: The one I have now, being a carpenter to pay the bills.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Kevin: As the singer, I tote a Shure SM58 wireless microphone, but as for the band, this is really a question for my fellow gearheads.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Kevin: On the corporate side, it’s a meat mill. Shallow, vacuous, ridiculously decadent, overfunded and utterly meaningless. Superficial brain candy.

On the indie side, it’s unfortunately polluted with amateur garbage that nobody in her or his right mind would ever want to listen to unless they were looking for a laugh.

The result being is that you can’t find anything now and real. Welcome to your half-time show!

Example: 1 million YouTube views of some jack-ass making a fool of himself crowing off David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust’ in his bedroom? More painful candy.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Kevin: We’re all upstanding people and nobody in this band has even had a parking ticket!

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Kevin: Our album is available at https://www.ironagemystics.com/
Visit our website, listen to our tunes, check out our stuff and if you feel inclined, buy something and become a part of this. Otherwise, just feel the vibe, kids…

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS ROCK!

Kevin: Thank you XS for giving us this time and press!
