Q & A With Kamikaze Zombie

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Clint: We are actually on the Road right now, but we have a package tour this summer with our friends in Hailshot. we are playing coast to coast Starting in Denver, Co and end in Savannah GA – We are also, planning on releasing our album “Night of the Nuberus” on vinyl sometime this summer.

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

Clint: Kamikaze Zombie was started in the fall of 2014. However, Steve and myself have been grinding in various bands since 2005. So it’s helped us with connections and such.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

Clint: I wanted to start a band that didn’t sound like anything in the Birmingham Scene. I get tired of people jumping on what’s “hot.’ and being all clicky. It felt very high school to me. So I was like fuck it, I wanna start a band that is a middle finger to what is “Cool”. I wanted to make Kamikaze Zombie  not able to be put into a box or a genre. I think we accomplished that. Everyone says, we are this or that. but we are just as much a trash band as we are a death metal band or a punk band. lol I started using Cross-Over just to be able to book us. lol – later we got more and more serious with it and are now trying to make a actual career out of it.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Clint: Our music back ground is DIY lol We never took lessons or anything like that. Neither Steve or myself were in band or anything. We just love music, we have a huge musically palette. So when we were about 15 we asked for guitars and that was it. We just set down and taught ourselves.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Clint: Well that is rather subjective. I mean it’s all relative to the listener. But, I can tell you what I hope it conveys. I hope it conveys that cool old school sound that just sucks you into another world. I hope it feels like you’re listening to a horror movie.

XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)

Clint: We just wanna get out and tour more and more. We hope to get signed to a certain label that we have our eye on. If that happened it would be a dream come true. Other than that to be able to make kamikaze Zombie a full time thing without having to have a full time day job.

XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?

Clint: We wanna go as far as we can take it. Our immediate goals are similar to long-term. We just want to do the damn thing.

XS ROCK: What do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Steve: I prefer playing live, All day!!

Clint: I like writing new songs and playing live. We both hate recording!! lol but love the finished product. lol

XS ROCK: What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Clint: LOL well everyday shit to be honest. but they are written with horror movie themes or other science fiction inspired subjects or sometimes real life serial killers. I like to write in such a way where, it has the feeling we are going for image wise, but has meaning for me to be able to put emotion into. It would be impossible for me to sing without meaning. ps none of our songs are about Satan even though I use “Satan” a lot in my lyrics.. he is just the great antagonist.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

Clint: Well this wasn’t on a tour, but it was most definitely outrageous. We open for Crowbar and this older lady was in the front row with her husband. The club we were playing at was really small especially for a band like Crowbar, so it was a packed house. The bands were backlined and we were pushed to the very front of the stage like sardines. This lady’s face was at my crotch for our entire set. After our last song, she screams at me loudly, I got to get a picture with you!! So I say ok, cool. let me load out first. – Picture time. She comes up and start putting her tits in my face.I pull away and  put my arm around her to just take a quick pick. ( her husband was standing beside me the whole time) she starts licking my neck then bites my ear and says I loved having my face so close to your crotch. I look straight at her husband and she then says, he doesn’t mind. We could all have some fun if you want. I say, my wife doing merch does and I run away as fast as my legs could carry me. later that night, I’m taking the merch to the van and I see our old drummer full on making out with that lady. Who was old enough to be my mom, Im 36 lol

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Clint: that would have to be have the 3 way with grandma. lol from the above question.

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?

Clint: kinda of, but they have always looked at music as a phase. So, I’ve just never looked for their support. In the end- it doesn’t matter anyway. It comes down to how bad do you want it and what are you willing to do to get it.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Steve: All of em !! lamo

Clint: My favorites songs live are Eraserhead, The Stone Giant and most recently I’ve grown fond of In the Mouth Of Madness. 1226 is also a fun one live.  They seem to get the crowd moving. The Blood Countess has been the crowd favorite on this tour. with death Rides A Horse the most well known, it was my favorite forever.. lol

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Steve: Dime Bag, Metallica, and Slayer!! Big time, Willy from Lamb of God too. Because I like they way they write. leads especially.

Clint: Shit.. White Zombie ( J Younger is the shit) Pantera, Slayer, The Bad Brains, HenRollins, New Orleans scene, Any thing Phil Anselmo touches, The Melvins. early punk and hardcore. and a billion more bands.  I love music that is its own thing, even if its part of a bigger genre. Its gotta stick out and its gotta be real, from the heart with some balls. oh, we both wanna mention Mastodon. the leviathan album was a huge influence on us both. why? Steve- have you heard the album? enough said.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Clint: realistically, I would kill for us to tour with my buds in Child Bite with Ghoul and SuperJoint as the headliners. That would be a sick fucking show.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Clint: lol getting the fuck out of Alabama. We have such amazing talent here. but very few ever leave their house.  It’s a crippling mindset that they seem to get into, almost like a fucking disease. Its heart breaking. Everyone around here with the expectation of a few bands are afraid of the “what if.’ I get asked a million times. how do you tour and keep a job. I always say, you have a mouth don’t you ? ASK OFF.. life is too short to waste on the “ what if’s” or on jobs that are a dime a dozen. So many people here quit before they every even started, just to make someone else rich. If they died tomorrow the company would move on like they never existed in the first place. You gotta life for you. Risk are what make life worth living.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Clint: I’ve owned a business before and was college instructor at one point. I would probably just do the day job I have now as a massage therapist. or maybe focus more on my screen printing gig.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Clint: We keep it simple and old school. I use a Paul Stanley Custom Ibanez Iceman, a peavey XXL head with a 4×12 peavey Cab. Steve and I run in stereo. As far as pedals. I have a metal muff , a boss tuner and a jam man loop for samples.

Steve:  I use a blackheart V guitar and Ibanez S Series guitars. Crate blue voodoo head with a 4×12 B-52 cab. pedels. electro harmonix, metal muff, boss delay, boss noise suppressor,  boss tuner, dunlop wah, MRX phase 90 we both us moogami cables.

Terry: I use a Pearl Kit, Axis pedals, Sabian/Wuhan Cymbals, Evans heads and Vic Firth Sticks.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Clint: It Sucks and Rules at the same time. I’m not a fan of the download age. I’m old school – I miss the record stores and having to wait to go by an album. I miss the DIY of it all and I hate how over saturated the market is. everyone thinks they are a fucking producer or engineer. Just because you have pro tools doesn’t mean you know what you’re doing. but, It rules at the same time because networking is so limitless and there are avenues for us that simply were not available back in the day. We literally have the world at our fingertips.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Clint: We are really goofy guys. I would say behind closed doors but if you ever seen us live you know that’s a lie. lol Steve and I have a strange obsession with Will ferrell ,We LOVE his movies. We just like to cut up and look at the fun side of life. if you can’t laugh you’re gonna have a hard time at things. 🙂

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

Clint: weird, loud, heavy, nasty and in your face.. We are everything you have already heard, but you have never heard nothing like us. No sense makes sense.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
