Q & A With Jeff Sandoval From Healing The Fray

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Jeff Sandoval – We have released our 3rd single “Outside Looking In, along with a video, off our album titled “Healing The Fray”. The track is available, along with our other 2 releases “Mercy” and “In God’s Time” on all streaming platforms.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

Jeff Sandoval – We have been writing record and performing since 2008. We decided to name the Band “Healing The Fray” aka “HTF” in 2019.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

Jeff Sandoval – A lifetime of being in love with music. I come from a long line of talented people. I have been writing and performing for most of my life.  It is the one thing that I know how to do. Meeting Araiza helped solidify the goal.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Jeff Sandoval – I do not have any professional training. I lost 70% of my hearing at a very young age. So I have been able to find the vibration in my head that fits the vibe of the riff or song being presented. I have always loved the melody and layers of vocal tones. Harmony is my favorite thing. That unique tone that fits perfectly.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Jeff Sandoval – We want our friends, family, fans, and follower to feel good when you listen to our music. Top-down, wind in your hair, sun on your face. Surrounded by your favorite people, so that our music can be that timestamp for that person, place or memory.

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

Jeff Sandoval – We want to write the music of your life. Something that you will carry with you during the happiest and saddest moments. Music that you will share with those that you love the most.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Jeff Sandoval – I prefer both and this is why. When I begin to write and track a new song, it is very personal. I have an intimate relationship with it. I get to keep it to myself and protect it, like a child. It’s only mine for that moment. Once I perform it. I get to share my emotional journey and give it away. The greatest joy any musician can have. The payback is when you hear the audience sing it back to you. It’s breathtaking.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Jeff Sandoval – The lyrics are about the day in the life of anyone and everyone. We all have highs and lows, trials and tribulations, love and anger. But, we try to write and convey that it is GOOD in every day.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

It is always about the SONG at that time, at that moment.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.

2013 NAMM we had to be on stage at 9 PM. Our drummer player, at the time, said let’s drop off the retail and walk to the event. “It’s only right there”. 3 Miles later carrying guitars, bass guitar, cymbals etc.

Roads were jam-packed with cars. No Taxi would stop. No idea what an Uber was. We got to the event within seconds of showtime walked on stage and began to play. Lessoned learn – Never listen to your drummer player.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Jeff Sandoval – If they could have my shoes.

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

Jeff Sandoval – Yes, they have always pushed me to do what I love, love what I do.

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

Practice, Practice, and Practice. Made the SONG priority. Write and refine every day. Check your ego at the door. Seek out a brilliant producer that will bring out the best in you. Love what you do and that will be conveyed to your fans.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Jeff Sandoval – I don’t have a favorite because I love them all differently. All I want is that each one will be the crowds favorite

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Jeff Sandoval – Brad Delp, Paul Rodgers, Lou Graham, Joe Lynn Turner, and Frank Hannon

Brad, Paul, Lou and Joe have amazing presences and vocal tones, plus they are all brilliant songwriters and performers. Frank Hannon validated that I could do this at a high level

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Jeff Sandoval – Aerosmith / PINK / Guns N Roses / Foo Fighters / Healing The Fray

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Jeff Sandoval – Personally my marriage and my 2 children

Musically – In 2013 we were considered for a Grammy Nomination for “Cross Your Mind”

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Jeff Sandoval – An Actor or an arborist

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Jeff Sandoval – Sennheiser wireless mic and in ears. Periodically, I will use a Telefunken mic

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Jeff Sandoval – We have to make the best of each scene. We need to find a way to connect with it. Become nimble and adaptable. There are music fans in each corner of the world – we need to go after each corner.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Jeff Sandoval – That I am from the city that Bugs Bunny made famous.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
