XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?
Rhiannon Neagle : Me and our drummer (Mike) created the band almost two years ago. We ended up getting our new members Clarke (guitarist) and Will (bassist) about a year ago.
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?
Rhiannon Neagle: I just have always wanted to be able to help people in the way music has always helped me.
XS ROCK: What is your music background?
Rhiannon Neagle: I started playing piano at a very young age. I ended going through school playing the clarinet and later switching to the bass clarinet. I started learning guitar when I was seven, however it was hard for me to be able to learn from somebody else because I’m left handed so I decided to teach myself. By the time I was twelve, I decided that I wanted to be able to play right handed being that I would have more options for guitars so that’s what I did. I taught myself how to play right handed and it took me two years of 8 hours a day every day, with frustration, to be able to do it fluently. Going back though, I also grew up doing a lot of acting and vocal training for musicals and around when I was 10, I decided that I wanted to be able to sing rock. So with the help of a vocal coach and many years of training,I got to where I am now.
XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
Rhiannon Neagle: Honestly, we aren’t really too sure what it conveys to other people. For me personally, it conveys a message of acceptance and honesty within one’s self.
XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?
Mike Pritchett: I want to play music as a living. I don’t care about fame or money. If I could wake up everyday knowing I have to practice or play a show and that’s how I make my living, then I’ll know I’ve achieved my goal. As a whole band, our goal is to be able to help people through music on the largest scale that we can.
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Rhiannon Neagle: Playing for a live audience because that’s where our songs really come to life. It’s my favorite part of being a musician.
XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Rhiannon Neagle: I like to leave them open for interpretation. What it means to one fan could be completely different that what it means to me. I write from pure emotion and whatever I feel in that moment is what comes out.
XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?
Rhiannon Neagle: Helping people is absolutely the most important thing.
Clarke Hildreth: If I can get a catchy riff stuck in somebody’s head and make them feel good, then my goal is met. On a bigger note, I do think progressing the music scene forward is important.
XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Rhiannon Neagle: At the end of our first tour, I had a guy do the most creepy thing. He shook my hand and aggressively kissed my cheek without permission. He then proceeded to say “If you weren’t young enough to be my daughter, I would keep you locked in my room all to myself.” I immediately walked out of the venue and refused to go back in. Now I don’t go anywhere at shows without the guys in my band.
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Rhiannon Neagle: On a different occasion then I previously talked about, I had one guy ask me to kiss him. I refused to do so. I definitely wasn’t about it.
XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?
Mike Pritchett: My friends and family support me to the fullest. Most of them make every show.
XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?
Mike Pritchett: Choose your bandmates WISELY! They are your second family. There will be arguments, so there will be situations where compromises for either you or the other person have to happen.
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Will Servary: Calling Out and Wastelands. Calling out is the first song we usually play and it’s a massive opener and gets the people jumping.
Clarke Hildreth: From our recent EP, I love to play Faster and Wastelands. These two songs stand out to me as very fun, and during shows we get a lot of crowd engagement during certain parts of them.
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Mike Pritchett: MXPX was the first band I ever saw live at a little club up my way. Just seeing how the fans reacted to live music as opposed to a tape or cd was amazing.
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Rhiannon Neagle: We would wanted our personal favorites on the bill. For Mike it would be Killswitch Engage. For Will it would be Breaking Benjamin. For me, I would LOVE to tour with Green Day.
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Mike Pritchett: For me it would have to be the amount of local shows that we have had sell out. It shows that we are gaining fans and people always want to come back to see us again.
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Will Servary: I would be an audio engineer because it still deals with music and I would enjoy making music sound as good as it possibly can.
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Will Servary: I use a Bugera Veyron with a Bugera 115 Cabinet and a 210. I also use a Darkglass X7 and a Darkglass Hyper Luminal. Mike plays Ludwig drums, Evans Heads, Sabian cymbals and Pearl Pedals. Rhiannon uses a SM58 Shure microphone with Shure in-ear monitors. She plays a Billie Joe signature Les Paul Junior with a marshall amplifier on stage. Clarke uses a Fender Blues Junior and a Gibson Les Paul with an Alesis preamp.
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Clarke Hildreth: I think the current music scene is getting ready for a new wave of rock music, and we want to be on the forefront.
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Clarke Hildreth: I think fans and personal friends of us are always surprised when they find out things about us. For me, it’s that my mother passed away last year. Some of her favorite things were music, travelling, and the beach, so I strive to live my life doing all of those things in her honor.
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Mike Pritchett: Become part of the E2L family!
XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS ROCK!
