Q & A With Dustin Rye From Them Fixes

Q & A With Them Fixes

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Dustin: We just released our debut EP Electric Prophetic and we are in the midst of trying to get it into everyone’s ears haha! In October we are hitting the studio again to do a fun single that will hopefully drop by the end of the year and we have shows throughout the rest of the year so 2020 is looking pretty prime to start moving as far as gigs.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

Dustin: November 4th will be exactly 2 years for this project but Shawn and I have been playing together since high school in various projects.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

Dustin: Comradery would be the first thing I’d say. You honestly can’t get any better than forming a bond over composing music together and then bringing those passions to life in the experience category in my opinion. It’s a whole thing. Having those kinds of bonds are irreplaceable.

Second, I’d say it’s tough but it’s a lot of fun as well.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Dustin: Been playing guitar and singing since I was 13. I played drums for about 3 years in a different project and I’ve filled in on various instruments with other buddy bands. As far as being trained Shawn and I are self-taught. The Internet is a wonderful thing.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Dustin: I would hope that our music and all that we do graphic and photo-wise properly represents one another. We are very focused on High Energy in terms of music and stage presence. We, of course, love the dirt and fuzz that we bring and again I would hope that would invite the listener into an atmosphere of grit and groove.

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

Dustin: A lot haha! Right now we are focusing on promoting our EP while we already are working on EP 2 writing-wise. Until then there are many places we wish to travel to and play and short term goals we wish to accomplish. Playlisting, Press, and ultimately landing bigger shows are hopefully in our future. Until then we will continue to hone our sound and sculpt our presence.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Dustin: Live for sure! Shows are our lifeblood and it’s something we enjoy SO much. After a while, though it gets to a point where you start feeling the pull to write and especially record.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Dustin: Lyrically our themes are varied but they are mostly about experiences at the moment. Sometimes life, sometimes Spiritual. Capturing those times in your life and bottling them into 3 minutes or so. What I strive to do is write something that can be relatable as well. It’s always great to not feel alone on issues, and when that comes alive in music you listen to it can be powerful.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

Dustin: Crafting songs properly I’d say.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

Dustin: Here’s all I’m gonna say on this one…Don’t drink Malort.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Dustin: I’d have to say the strangest request we’ve ever had was a fan asked Shawn and me to kiss haha

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

Dustin: Extremely. We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for our families that support what we do and help to make things happen!

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

Dustin: Take your time and try and craft GREAT songs. Don’t rush the process, but don’t let the flames die down too low either. Then when you go to record. Spend the extra money to go and do a release properly. Don’t settle when it comes to that. You’ll be far happier when your band is properly represented with Radio quality sound.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Dustin: At the moment Wake the Dead and we have a song called Scylla that’s a lot of fun as well!

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Dustin: AC\DC, KISS, Ozzy, Van Halen and the like. That era of live performances is something to behold and grabbing onto that lightning and riding it is so much fun.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Dustin: Royal Blood, Crobot, Red Fang, Queens of the Stone Age, Clutch or Whores would be suuuuuuuuper rad haha

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Dustin: Releasing our debut EP.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Dustin: Honestly, no clue. Something in IT maybe?

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Dustin: Deep Drums and a mountain of cabs.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Dustin: Depends on where you look. I think that Radio Rock is a gelatinous cube of bland and easy to consume products for the most part, While on the other hand, the underground Stoner\Doom and Hard Rock scene are full of amazing artists doing great things. They just don’t get covered by the commercial outlets. In a nutshell, there’s tons of amazing music in any genre out there but you have to be willing to turn over the rocks to find it.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Dustin: Deep down I’m a huge nerd and Megaman is my hero.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Dustin: We love you and we appreciate you GREATLY! If you haven’t had the chance please head to our Bandcamp at themfixes.bandcamp.com and buy some merch or listen to our EP! We would be nothing without your support!

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS ROCK!
