Q & A With Drake From OddFellas

Q & A With Drake From OddFellas

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Drake: “We’ve been traveling all year long doing show after show! Recently we have partnered up with Pavement Records to help release our self-titled EP! It will be available September 20th

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?
Drake: “Roughly 3 years.”

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?
Drake: “my motivation was the job that I hated going to every day knowing I should’ve been playing music. I know I won’t be happy doing anything else.”

XS ROCK: What is your music background?
Drake: “I’ve known I wanted to play and create music the minute I heard and understood what it was. From a very early age, I started making my own drum sets out of pots and pans. So yeah, drums were certainly my first interest. I eventually got pretty good and started drumming for my church through my entire youth. The boys that are in the band now would jam with me sometimes in and right after high school, but we never gave it 100% of our time. I started to learn guitar and writing my own songs soon after that because I knew I had to and needed to. Soon I met a guitarist named Tyler McElreath and started what is now OddFellas.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
Drake: Our image is not to have an image but that’s an image..so… yeah
Do what the hell you wanna do. Just take care of your shit. Like, your mental health and stuff like that.

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?
Drake: My goal is to stay true with my music, and to be happy. Maybe a Grammy but those irrelevant

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Live audience for sure! I love the feeling of doing whatever I wanna do on a stage.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Drake: Most of my lyrics for the material we have now is a mixture of following your dreams, not having parental support from the beginning, having a hard time with life but still going!

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?
Drake: Just being real is a very important thing to me. A lot of people are trying to do what’s been done, being someone completely opposite of who they really are, or what they want to do. Just be you.

Q & A With Drake From OddFellasXS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Drake: A cool story to me will always be when we had the bright idea to play on top of our van at Rocklahoma18! We had been there all weekend just hanging out, got drunk and bored so we put our drums and guitar amp up on the van and started jamming in the campground! We ended up drawing in about 30-50 people. One of those people happened to be one of the main guys for Sturgis Buffalo Chip rally. He asked us if we’d be interested in doing Sturgis! So we did! It’s crazy where being spontaneously drunk will get ya! We got yelled at not to do it too!! Don’t listen to people, just do what the hell you want and you’ll go somewhere.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Drake: it’s always strange to me when people ask me to buy my hat. Iv gotten offered some weird shit for my hat haha

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?
Drake: Friends? some of them are supportive and some of them still make jokes. Family? Some of them are supportive and some of them still tell me I’m in the wrong. The more successful we get the more “support” we have… it’s funny how some of this shit works. No one likes you until it’s too late for them too.

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?
Drake: Find some guys that are as dedicated as you are. Literally, do what you want to do and be good at it. Practice. Play as many shows as you can! Practice. Don’t do drugs

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Drake: ‘DEAD’ I love this one because it’s a jam song. We let it float in the air and do its own thing. It’s like an 8 or 10-minute song I believe! So good, and very emotional for me! I cry damn near every time we play it!

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Drake: there was this band we used to play with when we were getting started called NicNos from OKC! I never went to many rock shows before I started my own band, and seeing this band every time inspired me to be better and to be a performer! The lead man Josh Cox is a badass. I learned a lot from him and the way he drew in a crowd! Not sure what NicNos is up to nowadays but they fucking rock.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Drake: Pearl Jam, Foo fighters, Post Malone. and OddFellas

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Drake: I will always say that our biggest accomplishment is finally getting off our asses and doing this damn thing.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Drake: I would definitely be a chef!

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Drake: ya know, drums, guitars, bass, microphones, amps..haha
We’re about as raw as it gets. No fancy shit yet.

Q & A With Drake From OddFellasXS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Drake: I think it’s badass! There are so many different styles out there. Different generations. The only thing I absolutely hate is bands and artist that play cover songs. It’s hurting up and coming artist like ourselves. It’s so stupid.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Drake: I’m somewhat colorblind.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Drake: Our self titled EP is out on all streaming platforms Sep 20th!!!
