Q & A With Dan Tyrantor, Vocalist For Usurper

Q & A With Dan Tyrantor, Vocalist For Unsurper

USURPER have recorded 5 full length albums, 1 mini album, 1 rarities CD and toured 17 different countries around the world. USURPER’S blend of 80’s inspired thrash metal, classic heavy metal anthems, over-the-top chaos and hints of dark, melodic atmosphere have been a trademark of the band since day one. USURPER doesn’t preach any political/religious ideologies, or sing about any socially relevant topics. Topics such as: werewolves, monster folklore, alien invasions, ancient civilizations, ancient battles, cryptozoological creatures, hauntings, prophecies, time travel, and the paranormal in addition to their trademark ‘Metal Anthems’ are the essence of Usurper’s words, which when combined with the music, and artwork create a strange fantasy world of dark heavy metal horror.

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

DT: The new Usurper album, Lords Of The Permafrost, will be coming out in March on Soulseller Records. We are playing a record release show here in Chicago, as well as headlining the Cactus Club Stage at Milwaukee Spring Bash in April. We have a bunch of other cool stuff in the works as well.

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

DT: The band was formed in 1993, and the current core of the band has been together since 2003.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

DT: Money, fame, and women, of course!

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

DT: All of us have been playing music since the 80s. I, personally, have ZERO musical ability. I’m just naturally adept at yelling my head off.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

DT: We play 100% ass kicking Metal. No image required. We are what we are.

XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)

DT: To play as many shows as possible in front of as many unhinged drooling lunatics as possible.

XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?

DT: Interstellar domination, of course.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

DT: Writing and recording is fine and all, but Usurper was built for playing live. There is nothing that can compare to the frenzied madness shared between the band and the crowd.

XS ROCK: What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

DT: Cryptozoological and inter-dimensional beings, ancient civilizations and their folklore, and balls to the wall Metal anthems.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

DT: Many. But 99% of that stuff is classified. One time, we played to a packed house in the basement of a bagel shop, and it was absolute drunken mayhem.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

DT: For me it was a fan who bought every piece of merch that we had, and followed me around all night asking me to sign stuff, including her jacket and her stomach. We have a small, but dedicated legion of fans. I mean VERY dedicated.

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?

DT: Absolutely. My parents were hippies, and my father played in several bands which rehearsed in our attic. I was not only supported in my aspirations, but encouraged.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

DT: ‘I am Usurper’, ‘Kill for Metal’, ‘Full Moon Harvest’, anything that gets the crowd fired up.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

DT: I’m not a big fan or anything, but when I was a kid and saw KISS on tv, I was like “THAT’S what I want to do!” I really wanted to be a guitar player like Ace Frehley until I saw ‘The Ultimate Revenge’ VHS tape, and then I wanted to be Paul fucking Baloff!

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

DT: Usurper, 1975 Black Sabbath, 1980 Motorhead, and DiAnno era Iron Maiden.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

DT: Probably headlining day one at Inferno Fest in Norway.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

DT: Stand up comedian. The other guys in the band love it when I do my act.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

DT: Me? I just use whatever germ encrusted microphone is at the venue.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

DT: I don’t keep up with much current music. I mostly listen to the same stuff I did in 1992.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

DT: I possess the power of 10 chimpanzees.

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

DT: A big Metal meteor falling from the darkest depths of space smashing into your earholes.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

DT: New album ‘Lords of the Permafrost’ coming out March 22nd on Soulseller Records www.soulsellerrecords.com, and you can follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS Rock!

DT: Thanks!
