Q & A With Dan Nastasi And Larry Nieroda From Kings Never Die

Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

(Dan Nastasi) Of Course.. first. we just set up INSTAGRAM which will be the main place to get info..  @KingsNeverDieOfficial  otherwise, NEWS!! “Raise A Glass” EP’ released Jan 24th, 2020. UPSTATE Records along with BlocGlobal & Traffic Distribution. All great people and so grateful we are all working together.   EP’ Title Track Raise a Glass feat. Vinny Stigma & Mike Gallo from AF on Most of the Vocals.  We love the track and are so grateful we were able to do it with them.. An Honor honestly!!  also, First Single Before My Time.  The other 2 tracks are bangers, Never Know & The Juice. I think the EP’ is a great start and shows a taste of what we are capable of and shows the shape of where KND is going.    We have an immediate run right after the release. NJ, NY, PITT, OHIO, MILWAUKEE & Detroit. Playing with Great Bands… Murphy’s Law, Madball, Leeway, etc. GO TO INSTA or FACEBOOK @KingsNeverDieBand to get more info… Otherwise, Looking to play pretty consistent obviously in support of the EP’ the USA or EURO, Where ever they will have us… The Follow-Up Album is completely written and ready, We obviously need the Finances to Record that. We know who will be Producing with us already.  Just gotta connect with proper European Partner Label that believes…wants to help make all this happen so we can keep it rolling….ha

How long has the band been together?

(DAN NASTASI) Believe it or Not, Only since April 19′. Me and Larry really decided it was a go when A Great friend of ours Dave Riser out in PA (ROCK HARD STUDIOS) offered to let us record some tracks, which turned into 14.. haha. Honestly, without Dave this would have never happened and we are forever grateful. so, 8-9 months and I feel we’ve got a shitload done in a small amount of time, Thanks to Dave & Of coarse Mario & Kim at UPSTATE RECORDS. Mike Valente and All at Upstate BnB have been huge and we are so grateful, and now all those at BlocGlobal & Traffic. Throw in the guys in the band (which Included John Milnes who tracked the original drums with us) It’s really been incredible.

What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

(Larry Nieroda)  It just looked like fun.  I always wanted to do it.
(Dan Nastasi) Originally, I liked writing crazy songs and The Milnes Bros. allowed me to play with them.. haha

What is your music background?

(Larry Nieroda)  musical background… been playing heavy music in bands since ’86.
(Dan Nastasi) I like what Larry said… But, Musical?? I’m basically a hack that got pretty good at playing rhythm guitar. , Only know Chords, Cant read Music… But I know what I think sounds cool and I just keep writing and fucking with an idea to see if a song comes out of it.
Obviously 86-92 did the First 3/4 Mucky Pup Albums. 91-94 Did the Dog Eat Dog Warrant EP’ & All Boro Kings Album.
A few other what I would call projects filled in…. w/ Kings Never Die, really Starting my 3rd Band ever.. haha

What image do you think your music conveys?

(Dan Nastasi) WHATEVER WE ARE FEELING… “The Good Times & The Bad”. Great name for the Full length when it comes out.
(Larry Nieroda)  Nothing too deep.  Fun?  Camaraderie?

What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)

(Dan Nastasi) . Keep making music together and find ways to get it out so people can hear it and want to see the band play live.  Gotta keep Music coming out.. Need Funds to do that…..

What are your long-term career goals?

(Dan Nastasi) Obviously keep focused on what we are doing, how we are doing it. I Love the direction and who was playing with etc. FAMILY FIRST Always, We cant do this without the support of our Families. PERIOD!  I’d like to see where it takes us… I’m Older, Wiser, and a Little More Aggressive. haha
(Larry Nieroda)  In a perfect world, we would get to go to Europe 2 or 3 times a year for sure. Keep pounding UA.  I’d like to get to bring this to Japan for sure!  The frontiers for me are South America and Southeast Asia…if we get to go there I will die happier than I already will.

Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

(Dan Nastasi) . I Love to write, My First passion… But love to play live, especially the music that we created.  Nothing like it, To see the reaction of people…There’s nothing like it. Hope we get the opportunity to do it as much as possible
(Larry Nieroda)…I guess what I prefer is the tour.  I love to work on new material and I dig recording, but a nice European festival tour is a boatload of fun.

What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

(Dan Nastasi) I would say Song Writing-wise, I’ve found myself writing about things that make me feel good, or I think can have a POSITIVE Message rather then dwelling in negative. Whatever comes out from KND is what I’m or Dylan are feeling when we write the lyrics. Same for Musically, A piece of music from Larry, Jay Steve or myself is an expression of something going on with us. No different. If it makes people react, It’s Gold. Themes??  I don’t know… as I said before… “The Good Times and the Bad”

Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? .

What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

(DAN NASTASI) I had a guy offer me $5000 euro for my Mucky Pup, Red Charvel Original that is on the Cover.  SHOULD HAVE TAKEN IT??? and still have it MINT!!

Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band

(Larry Nieroda)… My Mom was cool, my dad didn’t really get it until I started getting to go overseas.
(Dan Nastasi) . same, Mom knew what it meant to me, Dad had a hard time understanding.

What are your favorite tracks to play live?

(Larry Nieroda).. honestly, we have a ton of tracks we’ve never even played loud in a room before!  That having been said, I like playing “The Juice” and “Never Know What You Might Find”.
(Dan Nastasi) STAND FOR IT ALL Hands Down.. Will be on the Full-length album. Killer Live and sets it off. Also, dig Before My Time because people have heard it and it goes over well live. Another one will be “WHAT you’re MADE OF” Were gonna start playing that on this next run. Brand new but will be a killer live song.

Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

(Larry Nieroda) So many but I’ll go with Metallica as being the first thing I got into that I could really identify with the way they looked and played.  They seemed like people I knew and not rock stars. Street people.
(Dan Nastasi) Honestly… RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS, Loved seeing them live and it got me going. Also, Murphy’s Law, Jimmy and Todd Youth God rest his soul.

If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

(Dan Nastasi)  aaaaaaa. That’s A Loaded Question!!  But, I think Fit wise Wisdom and Chains would be a great band to play with.  Honestly, we’re just grateful to be able to get some good shows and are hoping more come our way.  Have to be humble and grateful… That’s what it’s about

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

(Larry Nieroda) With Murphy’s Law I once played Yokohama Baseball Stadium in Japan…80,000 seats…very exciting! I also got to play with Murphy’s Law opening for the original Misfits at the Prudential Center in Newark in 2018.  Those were absolutely huge for me.
(Dan Nastasi) Obviously the Dog Eat Dog All Boro Kings Album.

If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

(Larry Nieroda) Blacksmith
(Dan Nastasi) Probably still working in a sweatshop, haha although, I always wanted to be a teacher and full-time football Coach

What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

(Larry) Dan and I both use Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifiers and ESP guitars!  Match made in heaven!
