Q & A With Dahlia Ray

Q & A With Dahlia Ray

XS ROCK. Tell me about your latest band news? Any new projects coming out? Live shows or announcements?
DAHLIA RAY. Hi! The latest band news would probably be that we are about to drop our full EP. We finished writing it at the beginning of this year so we have been anticipating this release for a while. Also, going a little old school and releasing physical copies before ANYTHING hits the internet! These will be available on our upcoming tour with Stitched Up Heart and Kaleido in November.

XS ROCK. So how long has the band been together?
DAHLIA RAY. I’ve been performing acoustically as a solo artist for over ten years now but Dahlia Ray was birthed at the beginning of this year. Literally on January 1st, 2019.

XS ROCK. What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?
DAHLIA RAY. I have been surrounded by music since I was born, so the only thing that really made sense to me was to pursue a career in music. I always saw it as an attainable goal, even when people thought I was too much of a dreamer. When my dad, who was a signed and globally touring musician, lost his life to heroin addiction, I knew even more that I had to carry out his legacy by giving my life to music.

XS ROCK. What is your music background?
DAHLIA RAY. My parents met in Hollywood, CA. My dad was in a signed band and was managing the Guitar Center on Sunset Blvd. My mom was dancing at Seventh Veil which is just a couple of blocks away. Needless to say, I was made shortly after! Haha. I always joke and say I was a Hollywood seed. I truly feel that music is in my DNA. I grew up around my father always recording music, playing drums and guitar, and singing and writing. It’s just a huge part of who I am.

XS ROCK. What image do you think your music conveys?
DAHLIA RAY. My music is a direct reflection of who I am. It’s modern and pop, like me, but it’s also influenced by rock and poetry, like me. Yes, some of my songs are just fun, but for the most part, I end up writing music that really means a lot to me.

XS ROCK. What are your current music career goals?
DAHLIA RAY. Really I just want to tour as much as possible and keep writing badass music.

XS ROCK. Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
DAHLIA RAY. It’s so hard to choose between the two because they are such vastly different yet equally fulfilling experiences. I need both to feel complete.

Q & A With Dahlia RayXS ROCK. What are your song lyrics about? What specific themes do they cover?
DAHLIA RAY. My songs are usually basically my diary entries. I really like to write about past relationships, current relationships, heartbreak, my depression, hope… I write from the heart, and sometimes I don’t know what’s going to come out when I put my pen on the paper.

XS ROCK. What is the single most important thing for you as a musician?
DAHLIA RAY. I think many musicians would agree.. but it’s when people tell me that my art saved their life or helped them get through a hard time.

XS ROCK. Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.
DAHLIA RAY. So many. But the one that stands out the most is probably when we got stuck at the Canadian border for SIX hours in the middle of the night, all because customs couldn’t figure out how to classify drumsticks… like they didn’t know what type of wood they were. It was fucking insane. Haha.

XS ROCK. What’s the strangest request you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
DAHLIA RAY. Someone once asked me to wear flip flops on stage because they had a foot fetish.

XS ROCK. Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a band?
DAHLIA RAY. Very much so. I think for a while people thought I was crazy but now that my hard work has begun to show, those who are close to me are proud of me.

XS ROCK. What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?
DAHLIA RAY. Don’t stop believin’, hold on to that feelin’.

XS ROCK. What are your favorite tracks to play live?
DAHLIA RAY. It’s hard to say but probably my cover of “Tears Don’t Fall” by Bullet for My Valentine because people never expect it.

XS ROCK. Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
DAHLIA RAY. My dad.

XS ROCK. If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
DAHLIA RAY. ME! Haha. Me headlining a world tour- all stadium shows.

XS ROCK. What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
DAHLIA RAY. Writing a full EP and making two music videos for a couple of the songs. It’s been a dream of mine for YEARS and I finally did it.

XS ROCK. If you weren’t performing in a band, what kind of career do you think you would have?
DAHLIA RAY. I’d probably be a psychologist. It was what I was going to college for before I quit to do music.

XS ROCK. What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
DAHLIA RAY. It used to be just me and an acoustic but I think we’re going to be vamping things up for this next tour. ūüôā

XS ROCK. What do you think of the current music scene?
DAHLIA RAY. I think music is changing and evolving more and more every day. Pop is melting into rock, rock is melting into pop. I love the current direction of a lot of pop music because it’s really becoming more raw every day and I think that’s making room for rock music to go more into the mainstream again.

XS ROCK. For anyone who doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
DAHLIA RAY. I used to be a cheerleading captain in High School. Hahaha. Also, I’m a Suicide Girl.

XS ROCK. Is there anything you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
DAHLIA RAY. Be yourself and don’t let the bastards get you down. And don’t scroll Facebook, it’s toxic. Tell yourself five things you’re grateful for every day. And ALWAYS stick it out for the silver lining… I promise it will always come.
