XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Christian: Well, we just released our brand new self-titled Dead By Wednesday album out now worldwide in stores & online via Combat Records. We are currently out on tour with the legendary Flotsam & Jetsam as direct support for a 30 date cross country tour helping promote & push our new release. So far, so good! The band has been great to us & we feel nothing but honored.
XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
Christian: DBW has been together since 2006 but is virtually a brand new outfit at this point. The only two remaining original members are me (Opus on drums) & the bassist Mike Modeste so basically the OG’s are the rhythm section which is very cool because most bands foundation is that. But with the line-up changes throughout the years, this powerful quartet has the same goals & focus with a team mentality so it finally is getting the respect this band deserves. This is why we did a self-titled album… one because we have never done one in our entire career but also because it’s like a rebranding or a rebirth if you will.
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Christian: For me, I just wanted to entertain people & one day hopes to leave a legacy. Now I’m happy just being a well-respected musician who makes a decent living. I mean the music industry has changed so much… it used to be all glamor & riches. Now it has literally turned into a blue collar job especially if you are playing more metal or hard rock style. I laugh and always say you get better benefits working at Starbucks rather than playing music. It’s sad because it stirs the youth away from ever wanting to try to do it for real. The first things that get cut from our school systems are music & art programs, so people don’t look at it as a fruitful career anymore. It’s all about heart, you either want to do it or you don’t. There is no maybe… it’s either do or do not as Yoda says… there is no try! I’ve been doing this since I was 13 years old & never stopped. Yes, of course, the fire inside me has gone up & down but it has never once gone out. From the first time I Heard & saw KISS, I knew that this is what I was meant to do.
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Christian: I love it all. My favorite is recording in the studio & creating new pieces of music & art that last a lifetime. Writing it beforehand is always fun too but the high is the live show. Everything else kinda sucks, to be honest… again, people think it’s so glamorous but honestly, the driving in between shows for hours on end, no sleeping or eating properly, missing your families, not working out or any sort of normalcy can wear on you eventually especially as you get older but it is what it is. Again, you either do it because it’s part of the job or you don’t. So if this is the path you choose, you have to do what goes along with it.
XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.
Christian: There’s so many! God, where do I start… from vehicles breaking down & being stuck in certain states for days on end & having to buy a shitty car & driving it dirty all the way back home until that one broke down too… then having vans that remind me of the movie “the money pit” where literally the side doors are falling off, to having green rooms given to us that literally was in the spare toilet at the venue where they served us food next to a toilet & then my tech Joel jokes around sitting on the toilet pretending to take a poop while eating fruit that was on the rider too so many kooky stories that would take a decade to write on here, lol
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Christian: No, not really… my mother has literally only been to one show my whole life & she only went because at the time I was all over TV too. Honestly, when I told them I wanted to play drums, they said no… they told me to try the cello…. but somehow every week the cello would break, haha… until one day I found a piece of shit broken down old orange sparkly Japanese drum set at a tag sale that I bought for $35 with my own paper route money that I saved but didn’t even have enough so I borrowed $10 from my older brother & literally beat on it every day for months on end playing along to shout at the devil and other stuff until I got the coordination & hang of it. Taught myself & then once I knew I had it, I took lessons for a year or so just to learn the basics & what I was doing right & wrong.
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Christian: My favorite songs to play live are “smelling salts”, “You&Die”, & probably “Pawns”.
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Christian: Well at first it was Peter Criss of KISS but after I met him & he was such a dick head to me where we literally almost got into a fist fight for me just asking for his signature after my band opened for his solo project., it sort of bummed me out. But honestly, inspirations for me were drummers like Jon Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Dave Lombardo, Vinnie Paul, Lars Ulrich, Tommy Lee, Bill Ward…
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Christian: It would be DBW on a fest with…
Pantera (if they were still around)
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Christian: For me personally, my greatest musical accomplishment has been playing at Woodstock ‘99 with my old project Gargantua Soul. But this band has done a lot of great big things as well since then. Tons of touring with so many great bands as well.
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Christian: Honestly, I don’t know what I would do with myself if I was playing music or performing in bands… this is me. It’s in my blood. I don’t know anything else. What could I do? Flip burgers??? I mean, I would maybe be a porn star but my dick is probably too small for that & I don’t think my girl would like that, Hahahaha…
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Christian: I use Tama star classic drums, & like Remo drum heads.. but I’m also endorsed by Trinity Cymbals, Vic Firth drum sticks!
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Christian: I think the current music scene is great. Metal music is thriving & growing again by leaps & bounds. I can tell from more people hitting shows, more music sales, etc, I just wish some of the bigger bands would give smaller talented bands more of a shot without all the political red tape industry “buy on” bullshit. You get what you pay for. A shitty band who pays you $10K or their parents’ money to open your show or a talented experienced kick ass band that you know will warm you up well that you throw a few hundred too to survive per show. It’s a sad state of the shitty music business.
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Christian: I was born in Rome, Italy & I also play guitar, bass, piano, & can sing. In fact, I even write some of the music a bunch as well for the band. I love writing songs & riffs as well as playing drums. I did one tour filling in for the Bullet Boys, played with Marc Rizzo of Soulfly (solo), & I’m also currently the drummer for David Ellefson of Megadeth’s solo band as well as the U.S touring drummer for his other side project Altitudes & Attitude with Frank Bello of Anthrax.
XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Christian: Dead By Wednesday is a less is more type of band not musically but with our approach. We like to take a page from bands like Pantera, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, etc. the real OG’s being a simple 4 piece. We try to utilize what we have to the best of our ability. Pack a lot into 4 instruments… we all sing. No backing tracks or samples… no frills… like a modern VH, Pantera mixed with our singer’s more new school metal approach. We like to mix the old school & new school Metal. 50/50 with our sound & same with screaming/singing. We keep it brutal heavy but also have some songs that are more melodic & showcase the fact that our singer can actually sing!
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Christian: Just throw away any preconceived ideas or notions you may have about DBW if you have any from throughout the years & give our newest self-turned dead by Wednesday album a listen & an honest chance. We are very proud of what we created & stand behind it 110%. Metal is about having an open mind not being a closed minded arm crossed elitist or critic. We have a lot to offer our fans & take this very seriously. Thank You to anyone who picked up our new album & anyone who has stuck by us supporting us throughout the years!! We love you. Much respect. And to all the people who have helped us along the way. We appreciate you more than you know!!
