Q & A With Atavastia

Q & A With Atavastia

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

We recently released our new single titled, “Through The Hollow Ravens Eyes” on all digital platforms. We’re also currently on a mini tour across Western Canada with our good friends in Sōlborn.

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

As a full lineup, September of 2018 but before that, the band was formed as one manned project founded by Mattias Sippola in 2015.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

Mattias: Music has always been a very important aspect of my life as it has helped me express myself in ways I wouldn’t be able to otherwise.

Dwayne: The exhilaration of playing live is what has drawn me into music.

Dalton: After seeing my first local metal show, I was convinced to be on the stage rather than just in the crowd.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Mattias: I started playing guitar seriously at the age of 14 and since I have also learned to play the piano which has helped a lot in the writing process. In the past couple of years, I have really delved into the world of producing and engineering as well.

Dalton: I started playing guitar at age 14. I have played in local metal bands and I have always found myself wanting to tour with a band and since moving to Vancouver and joining Atavistia, that dream has become a reality!

Dwayne: When I was 14, friends from school needed a bassist. I was the only other person in school who enjoyed metal at the time so I joined and learned the bass. After hearing Cynics “focus” and Sean Malone’s bass playing, I was dedicated to taking it seriously. Since then, I have toured and played shows in four countries and have shared the stage with some of my musical heroes.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Mattias: The music of Atavistia portrays many aspects of nature, time, space, sorrow, and happiness. We want the listeners to get lost in their own imaginations.

XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals?

To release our upcoming album, tour North America, become endorsed with companies of gear which we’ve always used, and to play 70 000 tons of metal!

XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?

To be financially self-sustaining and to make this a full-time career.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Mattias: 70 > 30 writing and recording to playing live.

Dalton: 50 – 50 writing and recording to playing live.

Dwayne: 40 < 60 writing and recording to playing live.

XS ROCK: What are your songs about?

Mattias: My writing objective is not to have a direct meaning for each song but to have the listener create their own story and imagination.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

Yes, we do actually haha… A hip hop artist from Edmonton wanted to buy a “beat” from one of our upcoming songs which were part of our setlist. Maybe ask us this question again after we’ve had a few more tours under our belt.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

This ties to the question above.

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?

Mattias: My parents are both musicians so they understand this world. They are beyond supportive.

Dalton: They have always supported me as a musician but when they found out about my aspirations to become a metal musician, they became discouraged and saw it as a waste of time. Since the short time I’ve been in Atavistia however, they’ve begun to see it as a positive.

Dwayne: Both of my parents are supportive and proud. Although, I’ve never really been a seeker of my parent’s approval.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Keep in mind our current and favorite setlist is all-new material so I guess people will now know the titles for some of the new tracks haha!

Mattias: The Forbidden One and Through The Hollow Ravens Eyes.

Dalton: Musically, Through The Hollow Ravens Eyes but emotionally, The Forbidden One.

Dwayne: Musically and emotionally, Eternal Oceans is my favorite as there are a lot of groovy bass lines.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Mattias: Witnessing Children Of Bodom and watching their tour videos inspired me to be a musical performer.

Recently though, acts like Wardruna and Heilung have been super inspiring for me performance-wise.

Dalton: Watching a coupe of my hometown local bands and seeing the successful turnouts was instrumental to me becoming a touring musician.

Dwayne: The rise of the Australian metalcore scene and seeing how much fun those shows were really made me want to play live and to be the performer on stage. More recently though, bands like Behemoth, Septic Flesh, Dimmu Borgir, Ne Obliscarvis, and Emperor to name a few have really inspired me as a live performer as they have a unique way of delivering live music as a solid entity.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Brymir, Wintersun, Ne Obliscarvis, Æther Realm, and Xanthochroid (Convincing them to play live again!)

These are just to name a few as there are too many to list.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

A successful Western Canadian Tour and overwhelmingly positive reviews of our new single, “Through The Hollow Ravens Eyes”

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Well, we already have jobs and careers outside of music but if we were to make music a full-time career, that would be a dream come true.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

We play Evertune equipped Ibanez guitars, Warwick basses, Emg pickups, Bare knuckle pickups, Elixir Strings, Gruv Gear fretwraps, Fractal Audio’s Axe fx systems, Line 6 wireless guitar systems, Sennheiser stereo in-ear monitor systems, SKB rack gear, and various other trinkets.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

We’re just starting to break our way in. We’re eager and excited and things are looking good for the future.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

People keep mentioning this Wintersun band which we’ve never heard of 😉

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

A striking wall of sound consisting of Blastbeats, powerful orchestrations, technical guitar structures, and dynamic vocals ranging from high screams to falsetto atmospheres.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

We would like to say thank you for the incredibly positive support and dedication out there and to check out our new single titled, “Through The Hollow Ravens Eyes”

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS Rock!

Thank you for having us! Cheers!
