Q & A With Andrew Lopez From Ænly

Q & A With Andrew Lopez From Ænly
Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
-We have just released our new single “Up In Smoke”, which was pretty fullfiling to get out there.
We actually have another single “Hostility” that we’re planning on releasing soon once we get everything solidified. We are also working on an idea for a new band T-shirt, just beta phase.
How long has the band been together?
-The band originally formed from one member Riggs roughly 2 years ago. Art then joined the project about 3 months later, along with myself. Then Manny had joined the band about 4 moths after that. We shuffled around for a little bit until we came upon Conner, our drummer. Finally, we had the final piece of the puzzle.
What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
-Our main reason for motivation would be to strive for a positive mindset, and and to help others reach their goals and aspirations.
For me personally (Drew), I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember. The ability to be in a band and have an outlet to reach out to others with our music inspires me to be a better vocalist and artist.
Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
-(Drew) Id prefer both honestly. But unfortunately, due to covid, the live shows need to be put on hold for now. But in the meantime, we have been working on some new material and ideas.
Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.
-Nothing yet. But once we do, we’ll make sure to let you know! Haha
What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
-We don’t have any of those experiences just yet, but if\when we do. We are not opposed to weirdness because we ourselves are a bit strange haha.
Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
-(Drew) My parents have been really supportive with our music. Though it isn’t their cup of tea , they constantly tell me how proud of me they are.
What are your favorite tracks to play live?
-(Drew) Right now, I would say my favorite live song would be either “Up In Smoke” or a single off our earlier EP called “All I Can”. Those two songs in particular get me lost and in the zone when performing.
Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
-Most of ÆNlY’s inspirations are derived from both old school metal, such as Meshuggah and slipknot. Nut also new school metal bands like Veil of Maya , Monuments, Architects, and Wage War.
If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
-(Drew) I personally think a tour over seas in Europe would be amazing to experience both solo and with the band buds. Traveling and performing with my friends is all I need.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
-(Drew) My personal accomplishment would be that I was able to get out of my shell. I’ve always been a timid and soft spoken person, so being able to reach these lengths with these guys has been uplifting. Also branching out and getting vocal lesson from Lukas Magyar of Veil of Maya to touch up my clean vocals.
If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
-(Drew) My career would probably be in football. I have always loved playing football and had a knack for it, but it wasn’t my priority.
What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
-(Drew) Shure58 mic.
-(Art) Jackson guitars and Mesa boogie Jp-2c+ and line 6 Helix.
-(Conner) DC California Drums, soultone symbols, vic-firth drums sticks.
-(Manny) Ampeg 4 x 10, with Ampeg portaflex 500 head. An Ampeg preamp pedal with Ibanez bass.
-(Riggs) strictly Mayones guitars with a Dan Gower custom modded Marshall GMP.
What do you think of the current music scene?
-(Drew) I think that this genre of music gets a negative wrap. i personally don’t understand why, but it is with this band we are hoping to change some of that negativity into positivity.

For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
-(Drew) Most people would probably be surprised by the many accents and impressions I do that the guys can’t stand, like Mickey Mouse lol . Also the fact that I am convinced that I was born Spiderman in another life haha.
If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
-We as a band don’t necessarily hear a specific sound that we’re aiming for, but some of our friends and fans have compared us to bands like Veil of Maya , Wage War and Periphery.
Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
-Thank you for the support everyone has been giving us so far. It really means the world to us that we’re able to reach people with our music and our message. We hope to continue to both entertain, and inspire.
Thanks again for taking the time to talk with XS Rock!
