Marta Gabriel Takes No Prisoners In This Spectacular Tribute Album To Metal's Best Female Vocalists

Crystal Viper frontwoman Marta Gabriel goes it alone on this solo outing featuring her covers of classic metal tracks from great female singers. Doing a covers album is always risky, because, let’s face it, you’ve heard the original version, and chances are we usually consider it the “best” version. This is especially true when you’re doing an album of songs by some of the strongest and most well-known female singers in metal, hence the name of this album, “Metal Queens”.  Marta Gabriel not only pulls this off but has earned my respect as a vocalist beyond what I have heard from her prior to this release. Her band Crystal Viper is a solid outfit, but I was seriously impressed with her vocals on “Metal Queens” because “I can” compare it to the originals and she nails it throughout this album. I am especially taken aback by her performance of “Light In The Dark”, originally sang by Leather Leone. But honestly, from the first song, this is a take no prisoners approach Garbriel takes and it shows that she’s got more balls than a lot of the male singers in the industry. There simply isn’t a bad song on this album. And if you’re already familiar with these songs, like I am, chances are good that you’ll love Marta’s versions of these spectacular tracks. Covering singers like Doro Pesch, Lee Aaron, Leather Leone, Wendy O. Williams, and Ann Boleyn isn’t an easy task, and yet she manages to take this diverse field of singers and make their songs her own on this great tribute album. I definitely want to hear her do more material with this kind of grit and power in the future. Outstanding is the best way I can describe “Metal Queens”.
