When it comes to the Jesus Lizard, you either believe it walks on water or you don’t. After listening to the band’s new album “Rack” their first album in 26 years, they bring an album that’s so good it leaves you wanting more. So much so, that in fact, it will make you instantly start the album over and enjoy it all over again like the instructions on a shampoo bottle, lather, rinse, repeat! So, yes…they do indeed walk on water!
Vocalist David Yow, guitarist Duane Denison, bassist David Wm. Sims, and drummer Mac McNeilly have all made it back together to unleash the fun, ridiculousness, and blazing energy of high-quality rock n’ roll.
Having not heard music like this in quite some time, it’s amazing how fresh and relevant it sounds to hear straight-ahead, in-your-face rock music that somehow sounds complicated and simple at the same time.
The Jesus Lizard is aging like a fine wine. While most fans would have rather gotten a new album by the band a lot sooner, at least they made it worth the wait by releasing an album that measures up to what fans have come to expect from their extraordinary discography output over the years.
Normally, this would be the part of the review where I would break out the best songs and describe them in full detail, but honestly, this album has no bad songs on it. I don’t think I could easily choose favorites and it’s a masterpiece of mayhem with the album feeling like an organic whole element all to itself. Combine the great musical elements with the street-wise poetry of David Yow and you’ve got yourself one of the best albums to come out this year!
