Interview With Will Martin From Earshot

Formed in 1999 with singer Wil Martin collaborating with original bassist Guy Couturier, drummer Dieter Hartman, and guitarist Scott Kohler, Los Angeles based heavy modern rock band, Earshot, released their debut album, LETTING GO (produced by David Kahne and mixed by Andy Wallace) in 2002 on Warner Bros. Records. Guitarist Mike Callahan and replacement bassist Johnny Sprague joined the band shortly after their debut album was completed.

During months of extensive touring with the likes of Hoobastank, Shinedown, Staind, Kid Rock, and Stone Temple Pilots, their debut single, “Get Away,” reached #4 on the U.S. Active Rock Radio Charts and stayed in the top 100 for over 64 weeks.

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Are there any new projects coming out, live shows, or announcements?

Will: No tours or shows at the moment, but we do have 2 new singles out YOU + I and TONGUE-TIED (unplugged).

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

Will: Earshot was originally formed in 1999, and we signed our first record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 2001. This lineup has been together for about 3 years now.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

Will: Originally, my main motivation to be an artist was to have an outlet for my own personal thoughts and feelings and to connect with other people who were similar and going through the same things in life that I was.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Will: Tough call. I like meeting new and interesting people so playing shows might have a slight edge.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.

Will: Well, the real interesting ones would take so long to type and I suck at typing! But, a tour bus that we once had burned to the ground barely a week after we switched to a new bus. So that was interesting.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Will: Oh man…I don’t know if it’s appropriate to mention here.

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?

Will: Yes and no. Some were against it, and some were all for it, but in the end, I made believers out of everyone.

What are your favorite tracks to play live? “

Will: Get Away”, “Wait”,…actually pretty much all of them.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Will: I was super influenced by bands of the ’90s, namely LIVE, Quicksand, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Smashing Pumpkins.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Will: Metallica.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Will: Creating music that people love and relate to.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Will: I’d probably still be in restaurant management which is what I was doing before we signed our first record deal.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Will: I use a Shure wireless mic, a Sennheiser wireless in-ear monitor system with Westone custom earmolds.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Will: Pretty bleak. There are a few new bands out there. But not too many.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Will: That I don’t listen to a lot of hard rock/metal most days.

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

Will: Heavy with a supersize side of awesome.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Will: Our official website is HTTP://www.earshotband.com

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with XS Rock!

Will: Anytime! – W
