Interview With Craig Rossi From Drift Into Black

Interview With Craig Rossi From Drift Into Black

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

Craig: Well the first two singles are out ‘The Burial Gown’ and ‘Among the Beast’. There is a lyric video for ‘The Burial Gown’ as well as a music video for ‘Among the Beast which was just released. The only project coming out is the new album which will be released April 23rd on vinyl

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?

Craig: Since 2017

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?

Craig: Well I was in a band previous for 18 years playing only keyboards. After I left I took about a 3-year hiatus and then decided to put together my very own solo project which is Drift into Black. I cannot be away from making music for too long with out starting to get that itch

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Craig: I played keyboards for the American doom metal band Grey Skies Fallen for 18 years. With them, we put out 5 LPs, two Eps, and about 3 singles

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Craig: Darkness and sometimes hope at the end of the tunnel

XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)

Craig: I just want to keep writing and recording. I want to release new music every year

XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?

Craig: My goal is to make enough music to the point where new recordings basically are paid for by what I sell. Right now I spend more than what I make like most bands

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Craig: I see myself as more of a songwriter than a performer so I love writing and recording

XS ROCK: What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Craig: A lot of my music is about human behavior. Psychological themes. I like to explain these topics through a storyline concept

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Craig: Hahaha none that I can think of

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?

Craig: Yes they were supportive because they saw that I was focusing on a career first and music as a hobby. Not the other way around.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Craig: If and when I do put Drift into Black on stage I think my favorite song to play would be “The Burial Gown”

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Craig: Amorphis, My Dying Bride, Opeth, and Paradise Lost

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Craig: Amorphis, My Dying Bride, Opeth, and Paradise Lost for sure

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Craig: I think the scene is great right now. There are a ton of new bands that just keep getting discovered on Bandcamp.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Craig: I think they’d be surprised by the wide variety of music I listen to. Everything from blackened doom to Hip hop. If the melody is good I’m going to like it and listen to it

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

Craig: doom metal that’s not afraid to lightly touch on other genres of metal without straying too far away from the doom sound

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Craig: I think my biggest accomplishment is starting Drift into Black 4 years ago and finally getting signed to a label with the opportunity to release my newest album on vinyl

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Craig: Well when I am not performing I am an IT support technician in NYC

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Craig: If and when I do take to the stage it will be an Orange amp rig along with my Gibson Les Paul

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there? Yes! thank you for your support and keep a lookout for the new album ‘Patterns of Light’ which will be released on April 23rd. you can pre-order your copy at https://driftintoblack2.bankcamp.com
