System Of A Down

System Of A Down Biography:

System of a Down formed in Glendale, California, in 1994, created by musicians of Armenian heritage who had previously crossed paths in the Los Angeles music scene. The group emerged after the breakup of an earlier project called Soil, which included Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian. When Soil dissolved, Tankian, Malakian, and Shavo Odadjian regrouped to form a new band, eventually recruiting drummer Andy Khachaturian before solidifying their classic lineup with John Dolmayan in 1997.

The band quickly developed a distinctive style that blended alternative metal, hard rock, and experimental elements, supported by politically charged themes and unconventional vocal and rhythmic structures. Their self‑titled debut album in 1998 introduced their intense, genre‑bending approach, but it was their 2001 album Toxicity that propelled them into global prominence. The record’s success helped establish them as one of the most influential metal acts of the early 2000s.

System of a Down continued their momentum with Steal This Album! (2002) and the companion releases Mezmerize and Hypnotize in 2005. Both 2005 albums debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, reflecting the band’s peak commercial impact. Their work during this era earned them four Grammy nominations, including a win for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2006. By this point, they had become known not only for their sound but also for their outspoken commentary on war, censorship, and social injustice.

In 2006, the band entered a hiatus, with members pursuing solo and side projects. Tankian launched a solo career, while Malakian and Dolmayan formed Scars on Broadway. Despite the break, their influence continued to grow, and in 2010 the band reunited for live performances. Although they have not released a full studio album since 2005, they returned to the studio in 2020 to record two new songs,“Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz”,in response to the conflict affecting Armenia and Artsakh.

Across their career, System of a Down has sold over 12 million records worldwide, with multiple singles, such as “Aerials” and “Hypnotize”, reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. Their lineup has remained remarkably stable since 1997, consisting of Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan. Their legacy is defined by a rare combination of musical experimentation, cultural identity, and political activism, making them one of the most distinctive and influential metal bands of their generation.
