Damon Johnson, known for the band Brother Cane and currently as a guitarist in Lynryd Skynrd, has spoken out on social media about the dangers of bigotry and racism. Johnson wanted to state for the record where he stands on the subject:
My family and I are anti-racist…fully and wholly against racism. Even as a child, once I was old enough to know the difference and detect friends or family with hatred and bigotry for another person, I knew I did not agree with them. If there is anyone that follows or has followed my career in music, that may unbelievably have a sliver of a doubt of where I stand, then doubt no more.
Anti-Racist: A person who recognizes racism’s pervasive nature and actively works to dismantle it, understanding that neutrality supports the status quo.
Let me repeat that last part: “…understanding that neutrality supports the status quo.”
If you actually are a racist, regardless of liking my music or any of the bands that I create and perform in, there is most likely nothing I can say or no lyrics I can write that are ever going to change your mind. But do not doubt that there is NOTHING of your bigotry that I want a goddamn thing to do with.
