XS ROCK Talks With Paul van Valkenburgh, Lead Singer of Tubefreeks

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Paul: Hey Bobby! Thanks a ton for having us on XSRock!! Tubefreeks has a ton of news! We’re going to be a part of an awesome show with Tora Tora here in December. And heading into 2018, we’re doing some great road trips including to Mason’s in Lakeland, FL and hitting 3 festivals including the Mesa meets Austin Stage (at South by Southwest) in Austin, the Jersey Shore Festival in NJ and the Mesa Music Festival in Mesa, AZ! On top of that, we’ve got a whole group of new tunes we’re working on. We plan to begin recording new material in 2018 following up on our 3rd album The Dry Tide which was released in 2017.

XS ROCK:How long has the band been together?
Paul: Tubefreeks has been around since the 90s. We’ve had a few up and down periods like most bands, but we’re on a roll now stronger than ever.

XS ROCK:What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Paul: We love hard rock / heavy music. And we know how to play and create music! ha ha! It’s just what we do!

XS ROCK:What is your music background?
Paul: I come from a family of musicians and I grew up playing drums. I picked up playing guitar and bass later. I’m just the singer at this point in Tubefreeks but I still play instruments mainly for writing purposes.

XS ROCK:What image do you think your music conveys?
Paul: Rowdy Rock!

XS ROCK:What are your immediate music career goals?
Paul: Just to rock as hard as we can whether that be at shows or recording or wherever!

XS ROCK:What are your long-term career goals?
Paul: same as the short term… to rock!!

XS ROCK:Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Paul: We love it all

XS ROCK Talks With Paul van Valkenburgh, Lead Singer of TubefreeksXS ROCK:What are your songs about?
Paul: We don’t really write too much about specific themes. Instead our lyrics are mostly abstract. We like to let the listener attach his / her own meaning to our songs.

XS ROCK:Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Paul: Ahhh… don’t want to get myself in trouble now!! ha ha ha!!

XS ROCK:What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Paul: Not sure if I can remember anything specific that stood out… but hanging out with rock fans is the best. They’re so passionate and cool.

XS ROCK:Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Paul: Absolutely

XS ROCK:What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Paul: Oh, I like ’em all but really enjoy songs with lots of harmonies now that we have the awesome Todd Stevens in the band. He’s a great singer and we can actually bring the harmonies to life live. We really like singing the song Anathemy (from our new album The Dry Tide) live.

XS ROCK:Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Paul: Oh man… the list goes on and on, but a couple of my heroes are for sure Ozzy and Steven Tyler. They’re two of the baddest ass frontmen ever.

XS ROCK:If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Paul: Oh, so many bands I wouldn’t even be able to begin to list them. Our influences are literally from hundreds of other bands.

XS ROCK:What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Paul: Just being a part of a kick-ass band really. We’ve done a ton of great shows and have great recordings, but the best part is just hanging with the guys and rockin’ out!!

XS ROCK:If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Paul: I would probably be an engineer…. I like to tinker with stuff.

XS ROCK:What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Paul: We use Mesa Boogie and PRS amps, Yamaha drums

XS ROCK:What do you think of the current music scene?
Paul: It depends what scene you are asking about… locally things are segmented by genres… but nationally and worldwide I would say the rock music is alive and well!!

XS ROCK:For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Paul: Me, personally? Well, I’m a mountaineer and climb big high mountains for fun!

XS ROCK:If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Paul: As power-groove hard rock!

XS ROCK:Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Paul: Once again wanted to say thanks Bobby for having us on! And thanks to all of our great friends out there! We’ll see you on the road in 2018 and sign up to our mailing list at Tubefreeks.com for updates!! And don’t forget the band name is spelled TUBEFREEKS… there are two E’s in Freek!! Rock on!!!

XS ROCK:Thanks again Paul, for taking the time to talk with us at XS Rock!
