Today I had a chance to play the XS ROCK version of 20 Questions with Troy Norr A.K.A Klaus König, Lead Vocalist for Them. They are highly recommended for fans of King Diamond, Mercyful Fate and those who like a splash of horror with their metal.
XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
TN: THEM just performed their first European tour which spanned across Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands and Spain. We are currently working on the follow up album to our 2016 Debut “Sweet Hollow”. Our 2nd album is officially titled “Manor of the Se7en Gables” and should be out late 2018.
XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
TN: The band has been together since 2015.
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
TN: Probably because my narcissistic tendencies are higher than most people. When I was young I loved the idea of performing in front of thousands of people. I used to dream and fantasize about it. I wanted nothing more for music to be my life and sole source of income. Now, I am just happy for it to be part of my life.
XS ROCK:What is your music background?
TN: When I was young, I played the trumpet for 13 years until I was in a car accident which destroyed my aperture and then I focused solely on singing.
XS ROCK:What image do you think your music conveys?
TN: Horror Heavy Metal Opera
XS ROCK:What are your immediate music career goals?
TN: Put out the 2nd and 3rd album which will be the conclusion to the saga of KK Fossor, the character I portray in music and live.
XS ROCK:What are your long-term career goals?
TN: I could be dead in 5 years and it will be ok. I have done everything I have ever wanted to do with music. If I am still alive, I will figure it out then for the next 5 years!
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
TN: That is a great question but hard to answer. The reason being two different sets of gears go into motion for each. When you write and record music, I believe it is more for yourself. When you perform the music you created, it is for the audience. Two different feelings I love both equally. But If I could only do one, I would have to choose to write and record music.
XS ROCK: What are your songs about?
TN: Sweet Hollow consists of twelve tracks telling the tragic tale of a man who loses his family and is put on the spot to save another. There is no happy ending here. Or is it even an ending?
XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
TN: There are definitely fun or funny moments. In the Netherlands we were on our day off walking through Amsterdam. As we were passing through a tight alleyway a man leaned over from one side as we passed and said “Psst..Psst…Hey you…Cocaine…Mafia Man”. Our guitarist Markus Ullrich had a full beard so he was the mafia man this strange drug dealer was calling to. I started to laugh like a hyena and for the remaining portion of our tour we constantly joked about it. Definitely a moment that kept our moral up as well as annoyed us due to repetition.
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
TN: I would not say any request was strange. Every request has involved an autograph and/or a photo. I never said no…ever. Off the stage, the fans come first!
XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
TN: My parents did not understand heavy metal and my mother insisted I finish college while I pursued my dream. Thanks to my mom it is now I can live my dream because of my college degree! Thank you mom! I love and miss you!
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
TN: The first three tracks on the album plus “When the clock struck twelve”. The intro and conclusion to the show always gets people pumped!
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
TN: I would have to say Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden was the first Heavy Metal group to ever move me enough to want to perform.
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
TN: King Diamond / THEM / Attic
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
TN: My greatest accomplishments are my 3 children despite what they may think of me at a given moment. They are my living legacy and I want nothing but the best for them.
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
TN: I already have a career in IT. I work in Healthcare.
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
TN: I use shure mics and shure wireless in-ear systems.
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
TN: I think the music scene is cyclic. What is popular today is not tomorrow but sees a resurgence years later.
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
TN: That not only can I imitate King Diamond, I also do a mean impersonation of Dave Mustaine. Don’t ask why! I just can do it.
XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
TN: King Diamond meets Megadeth meets Slayer
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XSRock!
TN: Thank you! Troy out!
