The Damned Things are an interesting rock supergroup featuring Joe Trohman and Andy Hurley of Fall Out Boy, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die, and Dan Andriano of Alkaline Trio.  I’ll be the first to admit when the band released Ironiclast back in 2010, I wasn’t the biggest fan.  Maybe I was expecting something different.  Maybe I thought it would be much heavier with Scott Ian in the mix.  Maybe it was ahead of its time and I just hadn’t caught up yet.  Whatever the case, I am impressed with the band’s latest release, High Crimes.  The band seems to channel a lot of different sounds this time out and I’m really digging it. I especially like the fun atmosphere of “Something Good”.  At times the band resembles everyone from Marilyn Manson, Cheap Trick to Nirvana.  And sometimes it’s all in the same song.  “Omen” is a great track with some dark vocals that give it a cool creepy vibe, while still being fun sounding. “Keep Crawling” is another favorite of mine with its heavy rock beat and powerful vocals.  All in all, this is a great album and it all works quite well.  The Damned Things seem to have real chemistry as a band this time out and what a huge difference it makes.  If you’re a metal fan of Scott’s other band Anthrax, you might be disappointed if you’re expecting something similar, but if you’re a fan of great rock music and you like a little genre-bending mixed in for good measure, this is a cool and refreshing album release.  Give this a spin and I think you’ll find it will quickly find a place in your current playlist for repeat listens.
