Q & A With Parallel Motion

Q & A With Parallel Motion
Parallel Motion was created in 2017. Since its inception, the band was clear they wanted be a metal band, but more importantly: a band that embraced each member’s influences. Their music surprised the public and was highlighted for its high energy and catchy hooks. The group has been received positively by US independent radio stations and also featured on digital magazines in the UK. Parallel Motion was even named ‘The Artist of The Month’ by Reverbnation .
At the end of 2019, they released their first EP Illogical which raised the bar for their high energy and emotional live performances. Their single “Illogical” was featured on Alternative Press’s ‘Discover Playlist’. Parallel Motion has been playing live quite extensively, even opening for globally recognized bands like Angel Vivaldi, Nita Strauss (Alice Cooper), Crazy Town, Islander, Shallow Side, and Hed PE just to mention a few.

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows, or announcements?

Jons Blakk: Just chilling, working on new ideas for a song, and our live set.

Dave Juan: Working on new music and preparing PM to take the stage soon.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

Jons Blakk: Since 2017. Dave is one of the original members.

Dave Juan: The band has been around since 2017.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

Jons Blakk: The joy of playing drums and hanging out with my friends. Then the sex, drugs, and rock & roll seduced me to where I wanted to become a Rockstar. So here I am chasing dreams. Let’s gooo!

Dave Juan: The connection you create with people through music and just the joy of making music.

Robb: To show my style of playing Bass and how I write music with it

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Jons Blakk: I started listening to that rap crap when I was a kid. Then at the age of 13, I got into skateboarding and that showed me a new world full of adrenaline and loud rock music. Slayer, Megadeth, Motörhead, Motley Crüe, Living Sacrifice, and King Diamond really shaped my musical taste.

Dave Juan: I started to get into music around 9 and when I saw Metallica Enter Sandman I knew that I wanted to rock n roll lol.

Robb: Well I grew up on classic rock/funk/jazz In my family household when I was younger, I’ve been playing Bass seriously for about 22 years now, my main playing styles are metal, funk n experimental

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Jons Blakk: That of hope and perseverance. We want our music to inspire change and motivate listeners to become a better self. “There’s a light waiting for us to switch it on…”

Dave Juan: Hope and honesty. I try to be honest with what I write and feel if it help someone, then that is a win in my book.

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

Jons Blakk: Short term we want to release a new video and long term we want to get this show on the road and expand our name.  I definitely want to establish a musical career playing with Parallel Motion.

Dave Juan: We want to bring PM to the world and continue to grow as a band.

Robb: To continue writing great music and releases and being out on the road/touring for at least 6months outta the yr. Id love to be able to make at least a comfortable living at what I enjoy most in life

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Jons Blakk: Working on a new record is always a great feeling but nothing beats the live shows. The mosh pits, the headbanging, and people signing your songs is something that never gets old. Not to mention the adrenaline rush when you get on stage, it’s like something takes a part of me…

Dave Juan: Creating is joyful, but when you play live and the crowd is feeding you it is unbeatable.

Robb: I actually enjoy both equally, but if I had to choose playing live is where my heart is

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Dave Juan: Light is about finding reasons to not end it all and that life is worth living. We draw from different places but depression was a heavy theme in our debut EP Illogical. But there is always hope behind our tracks.

Jons Blakk: Depression, mental slavery, hope, light in the middle of darkness.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

Jons Blakk: That I enjoy what I’m playing and the feeling. I enjoy playing for others and making them feel what I feel through my drums. I love making music that flows well together and gives a good vibe.

Dave Juan: That what I write or sing has soul in it and meaning. I don’t want to make music just to make it.

Robb: To be yourself, Express yourself in your playing style and to grow as a writer of music

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.

Jons Blakk: Nothing to share at this moment but we’ll sure to fill you in our latest shenanigans once we get back on the road lol.

Dave Juan: It was in 2018 we where all in the van driving back from a show and everybody was falling asleep and I got out in the middle of nowhere at a red light  and started dancing. Trust me nobody went back to sleep lol.

Robb: what happens on tour stays on tour

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Jons Blakk: One time this girl asked me if she could take a pic with me because I reminded her of an ex-boyfriend. She must’ve missed that ex-boy because she hugged me like I was him lol.

Dave Juan: Have one of her underwear, was awkward as hell.

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

Dave Juan: Yes, my kids and wife always are rocking my songs and are proud.

Jons Blakk: Yes. My daughter’s friends think that I’m a Rockstar and that feels awesome!

Robb: Yes, absolutely, course there are a few that wish I’d play pop or folk music..lol,but they  are generally happy I’m happy doing what I’m doing/playing

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

Jons Blakk: Do it from the heart or don’t do it at all. A lot happens in music and if you do it for other reasons you might be disappointed in the long run.

Dave Juan: Don’t let people tell you can’t and work hard and do it from the heart.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Dave Juan: Victim, The Monotony and Light.

Jons Blakk: The Monotony and Victim. Getting a little anxious to play Slave live. I know that song will definitely be a top 3 favorite songs to play live.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Jons Blakk: Motley Crüe. These 4 random dudes weren’t great musicians but they really had cojones to pursue their vision and dreams. Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx definitely inspired the crazy side in me. Not the best music but for sure one of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth with everything they’ve accomplished. To establish our name Parallel motion is what we want and to me, Motley Crüe is a blueprint to follow.

Dave Juan: Metallica got me into metal but Pantera and Korn just took my passion to the next level. The energy the heaviness just seeing those band on the charts but sounding so different was an inspiration.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Dave Juan: Korn, Slipknot, Deftones, Parallel Motion.

Jons Blakk: Opening acts: Living Sacrifice, Lamb of god, North Lane. Headliners: Rob Zombie, System of a Down, Parallel Motion.

Robb: Omg..there’s sooo many bands I’d love to go on tour with..but off the top of my head I’d say opening up for a lineup of Sic, Wage war, Northlane, Korn.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Dave Juan: After being un music for so long I have to say Slave has been the most accomplished I have felt as a singer and just every detail that is happening with that track. The hardest track emotionally I have had to record.

Jons Blakk: Musically Slave has been the best song I’ve recorded so far. It has great quality and mix, also the cover art, and the feedback has been phenomenal. Very proud of this song.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Dave Juan: Teacher, doctor, or something like that.

Jons Blakk: Architect, professional skateboarder or a Power Ranger. Most likely the latter one lol.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Dave Juan: Shure super 55 and Shure Wireless microphones.

Jons Blakk: Pearl drums roadshow kit. Zildjian cymbals, Remo heads, Vic Firth 5B sticks, DW 3000 twin pedal.

Robb: I play Warwick basses exclusively into a darkglass X pedal Into a darkglass microtube 900 amp which goes into a Gallian Krueger 4+10 neo cabinet.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Dave Juan: I think it is setting itself up to be better and stronger.

Jons Blakk: It’s alright. There’s always room for improvement and we want to help with that.

Robb: I think it’s great and fantastic, there is something for everybody in a wide range of sub genes even down to the local band levels.ya just gotta search for it.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Jons Blakk: If you think I’m crazy wait till you know me lol (jk I’m cool don’t be scared). “If you met me you won’t regret me, s*** if you met me you won’t forget me…”

Dave Juan: That I am not as serious as they think, I love partying but oh damn I said too much.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

Dave Juan: Keep sharing our music and message us we are always around to talk. We will see you soon.

Jons Blakk: Keep listening to Slave and Parallel Motion. We will continue working hard to produce music worth sharing with you all. Please share our music with your world! Stay tuned for more. Peace!
