Q & A With Martyr Art

Q & A With Martyr Art

Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

I just dropped the newest Martyr Art ep, ‘Through Soundwaves Vol. 2’. Currently available on Bandcamp, it’ll be on Spotify and everywhere else end-of-June (at the latest)

How long has the band been together?

Let’s see… I’ve been drifting along as Martyr Art for about 16 years.

What is your music background?

I pretty much learn and write everything by ear. My dad initially taught me how to play guitar…eventually I took classical guitar lessons for a few months for better technique and to expand the scope of my creativity. Sang in 7th grade chorus and switched to school band from 8th to 12th grade. My dad also brought me to blues jams, forced me to break out of my comfort zone, which was narrow at that time… especially when it came to guitar solos.

What image do you think your music conveys?

Haunting darkness and lurking shadows with glimmers of light/hope.

What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)

  1. Complete the back catalogue remasters (1998-2019)
  2. Complete and release ’Through Soundwaves Vol. 3 & 4’ (2020/2021)
  3. Complete and release ‘At The Core of Darkness I & II’ (2021/2022)
  4. Play live again? Maybe have a full band and actually tour. (2021?)

What are your long-term career goals?

Do exactly what I’m doing now on a larger scale.

Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Composing for sure, it appeals to my compulsive creative behavior… which is constant.

What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Real-life situations, daily struggles, horrors and experiences. I have zero interest writing about dragons and I’ve only written a handful of “happy” songs.

Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in. Unfortunately, I’ve never toured in the traditional sense, just one-off’s or weekend warrior situations. I’d love the opportunity to tour or jump on a well done packaged tour.

What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans? There have been, let’s say interesting requests from fans between both my previous band and Martyr Art… but I’ll keep those to myself, lol.

Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band? They were very supportive, for a time my dad even helped manage my previous band Diabolic (which later became Dislocate). My aunt Kathy gave me my first-ever guitar… which I still own and use on record from time-to-time.

What are your favorite tracks to play live?

“Binary Slavery”, Motion”, “Friday The 13th (Nintendo Theme)”, “Money”, “Just”, “Better Than Me”, “Constrict”… pretty much anything I can lose my mind to, lol.

Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Metallica… because The Black Album.

What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

I’m alive and that I’m just as passionate about my art as ever… maybe even more so now.

What do you think of the current music scene?

Um… it’s pretty much non-existent… Thanks Covid-19!

If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?

The dichotic sounds of the 21st Century.

Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
