Q & A With Between The Rain

Q & A With Between The Rain

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

BTR: Well, we wish we were announcing tour dates; unfortunately it looks like we won’t be gathering in crowds until 2021. That said, we’re pumped to be working with Pavement Entertainment these days.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

Tim: I started playing with Victoria in 2008. We linked up with Roddy in early 2019.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

Victoria: I’ve always enjoyed activities better in groups — travel, sports, music. There’s a satisfaction in creating music with others that I don’t necessarily get on my own.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

Roddy: I started playing drums at age 9 in school band. From there I progressed to jamming out classic rock songs, to grunge cover bands, and then to original rock bands.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

Roddy: I think we convey what we are —  a tight, diverse group of friends playing as one.

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

BTR: We want to play as many shows and record as many quality tracks as we can for quite a while. We want to give the world a type of rock n’ roll that’s unique and stands tall.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

Victoria: Tough to make a decision… Writing can be cathartic, but I think the real excitement comes through live performance. It’s exhilarating — sometimes terrifying, but ultimately satisfying.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Tim: My lyrics tend to either be autobiographically, or completely conjured. Points made either from life experience, or from a fabled perception. I try to avoid pervasive themes in the subject matter, giving every song its own identity.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

Roddy: I have to be enjoying myself. If not, I move on to another project.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road? If so, please fill us in.

Victoria: We once played an outdoor party show; we were maybe the third band to play… Anyway we got through roughly 2 1/2 of our heavier songs before the cops showed up to shut the whole thing down — the crowd was simply too rowdy!

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

Roddy: A genuine “Freebird” request!

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

Roddy: Always have, and I have a big family!

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

Victoria: Start playing and don’t stop. Listen back and modify according YOUR standards. Don’t allow anyone to dictate what you as a musician should or shouldn’t sound like.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

Tim: “Paradox” and “Lunacy”

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

Roddy: Too many to list. I’m inspired by music in general –  if you pay attention, you can learn from anyone; superstars and local bands alike.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

Tim: There are so many bands we’d love to play with, but if I HAD to choose.. Chevelle, Candlebox, and 10 Years.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

Roddy: The music I’ve helped shape with Tim and Victoria.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

Tim: I think I’d be acting or writing fiction.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

Roddy: I use a Tama Rockstar kit, Mapex Sledgehammer snare, Zildjian and Sabian cymbals, and Iron Cobra Pedals.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

Victoria: Which one? The industry as a whole has been shifting rapidly for a few decades now. Technological advancement has irreversibly altered the way we “ingest” music. There are still rock “scenes” as we used to think of them, but they are in pockets. You have to dig to find the people and venues supporting them.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

Tim: I enjoy studying world history in my free time.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

BTR: Thank you for listening! We can’t wait until we’re able to tour again, it’s going to be epic. Keep an eye out for new music!

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS ROCK!

BTR: Thank you for having us!
