Q & A With Angelo Coppola From The Lows

Q & A With Angelo Coppola From The Lows

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?

ANGELO COPPOLA: With the pandemic in the U.S. right now, The Lows had many great shows postponed or canceled including shows with Candlebox. So needless to say, that has put a stronghold on future bookings until we’re allowed to have crowds again. We have a new EP or more worth of material that we are scheduling to record once we are able to, and I look forward to the opportunity to get in front of an audience again soon.

XS ROCK: So how long has the band been together?

ANGELO COPPOLA: The band started with the recording and release of The Lows debut self-titled EP in the fall of 2017 which was originally a project started by myself. Through the original recordings of the EP, I was able to entice some of the best musicians I know to perform the songs with me. So almost 3 years all together.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for originally starting or being in a band?

ANGELO COPPOLA: I was originally a drummer in quite a few Detroit bands in my teen years, but my love of songwriting and singing led me to want to front a band, which led to The Lows. Music is my passion and the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do!

XS ROCK: What is your music background?

ANGELO COPPOLA: I began playing drums when I was about 2 years old and my Dad would sit me on the drum throne. He would put on classic rock such as Kiss, AC/DC, etc and realized I was holding my own playing along with them. When I was 8 years old, I won the TV show America’s Most Talented Kids playing “Rock & Roll All Nite” on drums. In middle school, I formed my first bands and started playing shows all over the metro-Detroit area. After high school, I earned a BA degree in Music Business at the Detroit Institute of Music Education.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?

ANGELO COPPOLA: Straight forward, hard-hitting, passionate rock and roll. We like hooks that you can sing along to, and heavy riffs that grab the listener. Being from Detroit, we are influenced by all of the awesome music that has come out of our city, and we also all have a deep love for the 90’s Seattle scene of Grunge bands.

XS ROCK: What are your current music career goals?

ANGELO COPPOLA: For The Lows to be the biggest band since The Beatles, and also to make a positive change in the world with our music.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

ANGELO COPPOLA: While I love writing songs and expressing myself in that way, there’s nothing like the atmosphere and energy of a live audience.

XS ROCK: What are your songs’ lyrics about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

ANGELO COPPOLA: All of The Lows lyrics come from a personal place, whether it’s life experiences or views on the world. Our most recent singles both have love as a theme, but not the romantic kind, rather the state of love in society and the world today.

XS ROCK: What is the single most important thing to you as a musician?

ANGELO COPPOLA: The relationships with other musicians or people that you make along the way from the passion of creating and sharing your music.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?

ANGELO COPPOLA: The Lows played the 2019 Detroit Grand Prix and once we arrived, we drove around the entire site for about 2 hours and nobody had any idea where we had to go to get to the stage. Then we found out we had to actually drive on the racetrack to get to it. Once we finally got there, I had to fit our large SUV with all of our equipment into a parking spot way too tight for it. We then got to share the stage with Stone Temple Pilots, however, we had to perform AFTER them while the race was going on.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?

ANGELO COPPOLA: Not as strange as it is unusual, but our bassist Wolf is an ordained minister and two very supportive fans of The Lows requested that he marry them at one of our shows. We happily obliged and the first Lows show wedding was awesome.

XS ROCK: Are your friends and family supportive of your choice to play in a rock band?

ANGELO COPPOLA: My family has always been my biggest support of my music career and helps me with anything I want to do. My Dad helps me manage the band and has a degree from Berklee College of Music himself and much experience in the music industry. I am also blessed to have such an awesome circle of friends who always come to every show and sing along and cheer me on.

XS ROCK: What advice do you have for new bands trying to get started?

ANGELO COPPOLA: Make music that you would enjoy listening to and be true to yourself. Play as many shows as possible and make as many connections as you can. Meeting people and building your reputation up is the most important thing.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?

ANGELO COPPOLA: We tend to open a lot of our shows with the track “Purple” because of it’s groove and high energy so that’s definitely a favorite. However our latest single, “Love Will Find A Way” has been a clear fan favorite and with crowds singing it along with me, it’s become my favorite to perform.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?

ANGELO COPPOLA: I have many influences that have inspired me to perform and make music my career. From the band that introduced me to rock and roll Kiss, to the band that inspired me to become a songwriter in the first place Nirvana. My influences are all across the board.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?

ANGELO COPPOLA: The Lows, Candlebox, and Pearl Jam, arena tour.

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?

ANGELO COPPOLA: Some things I am most proud of are: Being valedictorian at my music college, being named Best Musical Artist in the Detroit Metro Times for 2019, and being nominated for 4 Detroit Music Awards for The Lows in 2019.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?

ANGELO COPPOLA: I’m a huge sports and pro wrestling fan, and I love to talk about it, so probably some kind of sports broadcaster or announcer.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?

ANGELO COPPOLA: Everyone in the band has their own preferences when it comes to equipment. A great musician can make a bad instrument sound good!

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?

ANGELO COPPOLA: I think rock and roll is ready for a band to step up and start this resurgence. And The Lows are prepared to be that band.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

ANGELO COPPOLA: That every member of The Lows has a very extensive and diverse musical background and story. We are an unlikely cast of characters and a melting pot of styles that when brought together make something completely new and unique.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?

ANGELO COPPOLA: Keep it on The Lows! All support is much appreciated, please listen to our songs on any streaming platform and spread the word. Look for us coming to a town near you ASAP.

XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS ROCK!
