XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or
Lorenzo : Our album “Innocence” will be released in the USA and in Canada on
September 8th! On the same day we’ll release the new music video of the song “Dawn”.
We’re super exited!
XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
Riccardo : Me and Francesco know each other for ages.. after a couple of cover bands,
we decided to make something new about 4 years ago. But it only was when we found
Fabio (bass) that the project started officially. Lorenzo (lead guitar) eventually got in
after an audition in 2016, just in time to write all the solos in the album.
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Francesco: We wanted to bring something new to the table: we tried very hard to merge
our musical tastes into something original and unheard. The ultimate goal was to make
the music we wanted like to hear, but was not around yet.
XS ROCK: What is your music background?
Riccardo: Me and Fabio are the ones that grew up with a more “modern” kind of Metal –
Tool, Lamb of God, Meshuggah and Gojira just to name a few.
Lorenzo: As for me and Francesco, we look up to more “classic” names as Iron Maiden
or Metallica, but still embrace in our styles some aspects of the modern approach to riffs
XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
Fabio: I think an image that suits our music is the cover art of our album: It embodies a
style which is aggressive but yet classical, something that tries to express some kind of
anguish. Something like Munch’s famous painting “The Scream”.
Lorenzo: When I write or play my music I imagine to focus all my negative feelings into
an explosive outburst of energy.
XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals?
Fabio: Open for Gojira Aahah!
Francesco: Well surely we want to perform in some big stages like Waken, maybe Gojira
in 5 years… but we have to start with some views on YouTube and smaller gigs.
XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?
Riccardo : Creating a legacy, and playing with our musical heroes.
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Fabio and Riccardo: Playing for a live audience!
Lorenzo and Francesco: We prefer to write and record, because you can take your time,
and always go back to fix your intuition. Live is great, but writing is the epitome of our
XS ROCK: What is the lyrical concept of your songs about?
Francesco: Well, the lyrical content of the album can be divided in two main themes. The
inspiration for some songs came after a documentary I saw about the condition of the
Youth in Siria, right before the civil war. These young guys experienced terrible
repression of any free thought by the government of the time. I put myself in their heads
and thought: “Well, War is shit, I just want to study, listen to music, live my life. But I
really have no choice but to fight”. That is the main theme for songs like “Innocence”: when I sing
“Innocence is gone from me now” – it means that I am abandoning it to go to war. Same as “Bullet in the Head” or “Take my Hand”. Some other songs are just free thoughts about Life and Death in general.
XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Fabio: We reamped guitars and bass in a little house in a forest – a place where we could
crank up the amps to 11 – but it was full of horrendous insects and scorpions. We had to
clean up the place for a good half and hour before we could feel safe ahahah!
We stayed up all night and completed the reamping in just one session! I think I fell
asleep on the chair at some point..
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Lorenzo: Once we signed a tit! Ahahahha Another time someone asked our bassist to
start a demential cover band of our songs.
XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Fabio : Absolutely not, they are really against all my musical ventures.
Riccardo : Ours are mostly supportive: the garage – our cave and where we recorded
everything – is given to us by Francesco’s parents.
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Francesco: Dawn, absolutely. Reflections too, because I have a 20 second scream in it!
Lorenzo: Time doesn’t Exists, it is so progressive and challenging.
Fabio: Take my Hand, the background vocals in it is so much fun.
Riccardo: Dawn for me too.
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Francesco: James Hetfield, if you play guitar and sing, he is the GOD.
Lorenzo: My god is Petrucci, he has the best left hand touch around.
Fabio: Mudvayne bassist Ryan Martinie, his stage presence is amazing.
Riccardo: Chris Adler. His playing is just so cool.
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Fabio: Veins headliners! Metallica, Gojira, Meshuggah and Iron Maiden. Maybe Slayer.
They got the best pits. We would like to perform with an orchestra, too.
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Lorenzo: Our album is a very diverse one, we think it really stands out from the others.
We didn’t follow any rules writing it, and the feedback up to this date is very good. We
think the people that really listened to it, free-minded got that. This is what makes us
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Lorenzo: I would play by myself, the perfection of Music is really the most intense
experience in my life.
Fabio: Well, for the Multiverse Theory, there are infinite parallel Universes, in which
every one of them hosts every possible outcome of reality. I assure you, I play bass in all
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Fabio: 6 string fretless Peavy with passive pickups, Darkglass B7K drive into a Markbass
Francesco: We actually bring our laptop on stage and we play with virtual instruments!
Bias FX is our choice. It is just plain convenient, weight wise and money wise.
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Lorenzo: Stereotypes everywhere. There are a huge amount of really good players, but
nowadays the internet gives rise also to the opposite: a lot of people that really don’t know
what they’re doing, and don’t have the humility question themselves.
Francesco: Most people are also envious of each other, it’s terrible out there.
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Veins: We made everything by ourselves. We didn’t follow any rules, so we have a fresh
approach to Metal and all the Music in general.
XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Francesco: I visualize our sound as something visceral, that comes from the guts.
Fabio: When I produce our bass sound, I imagine it as a rusted machine that grinds. Or
something like a rusted car exhaust.
Lorenzo: It is a rollercoaster – intensity wise. In my solos or riffs, I always try to add
contrast to the previous mood of the song. To give it more depth.
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Veins: For Metal listeners: Give us a chance, we’ll not let you down.
For Non-Metal listener: Give Metal a chance. It is pure and honest.
LET THE METAL RUN IN YOUR VEINS.
XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS Rock!
