XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Sabrina: Gigs! First off we have a tour in Sweden we call Triple Thrash Treat, together with the awesome Reignsaw (which I recommend you check out) and FKU.
We also have some European dates planned in march/april. In the summer there will be festivals. I am also in the process already of writing new songs for another album – so we will have a busy 2018!
XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
Sabrina: The original Ice Age line up was together between 85 until 89, and the present Ice Age line up since 2015.
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Sabrina: At that time I believe it was quite unusual for a young girl to start playing metal in a suburb. I guess I got fed up with playing air guitar with my ice hockey stick to my metal records. So it was better with the real thing. I bought a guitar and started practicing. My motivation was an inner I-have-to-do-this feeling.
XS ROCK: What is your music background?
Sabrina: As I mentioned I started playing in my early teens, formed a band and we were lucky enough to get offered a record deal. We were featured on a Swedish compilation with several other metal bands. This was in the early 80’s. After this I started Ice Age.
XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
Sabrina: I don’t think our music conveys an image of any kind – I don’t put on an image when I write or play the songs.
XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.)
Sabrina: To write more new songs and record another album, and to play live of course – cliché 😉
XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?
Sabrina: As long as I enjoy it – see the previous question 😉
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Sabrina: Tough question… writing new songs is where my creative part gets fulfilled, but still, being onstage and meeting all the people who enjoy what I have written, seeing them singing along to our lyrics, all that is truly amazing and gives a different kind of energy and creative fulfillness – I just love it!
XS ROCK: What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
Sabrina: Our songs are not about fiction and fantasy – they are about either self experienced stuff or about problems in our world today, as we see them. I think its important to enlighten some of the issues that is causing the destruction of earth. Lyrics is quite important to me.
XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Sabrina: Since I am such a well behaved and quiet girl I’ve never really experienced any outrageous tour story as such, haha. But perhaps it was quite an outrageous story when I got thrown off the tourbus in the middle of the motorway by the then managemernt on a tour in the UK. He threathened to kill me and said “If I ever see you again I will kill you”. Then the bus left me. I never saw my then guitars ever again. It wasn’t’ the cleverest move I think by the manager to throw off the frontgirl with another 20 gigs ahead, and as you understand they had to cancel the rest of the tour.
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Sabrina: An Italian fan with pretty poor English asked me “Do you like let in boys” I thought he was being rude and I got very upset. Then somebody knocked on my back and laughed.
He meant “Do you like Latin boys” I still didn’t know what that question had to do with anything so I didn’t reply.
XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Sabrina: My mother was a musician herself so she understood my decision of a hobby.
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Sabrina: Clever – It’s a catchy tune and people start banging their heads when we play it
But I actually love playing all the tracks
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Sabrina: When I first discovered The Runaways they made me realise that “Hey, girls can play hard rock to” but they didn’t actually inspire me musically. The bands that I got inspired by musically was the bands that came with the NWOBHM and the early thrash with Megadeth,Metallica and so on.I just loved the riffing and the energy these bands had.
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Sabrina: It would be The New Big Four. Tyranex, Reignsaw, Ice Age and Mefisto . it happens that they are all label band mates – but I love the sound of all of them!
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Sabrina: To finally be able to record and release an album after 30 years and to see that its getting great reviews and that the old fans that have stuck with Ice Age (although we didn’t exist for so many years) are buying and loving it!
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Sabrina: I really don’t know – I was born to play guitar!
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Sabrina: I use a Gibson Flying V guitar, Engl amp, Shure wireless system, octaver and chorus pedals.
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Sabrina: I have to admit that I don’t keep a good check on the music scene here in general but there are som new bands that catches my ears of course. But I still mostly listen to the classic metal bands I have to admit…
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Sabrina: We were bigger then many people may believe back in the 80’s. We sold out the legendary Marquee club in London, Hollywood producer Kim Fowley travelled to Sweden to sign us, said that we were the ‘next big thing in metal’ etc etc. All this on the back of demo tapes. Unfortunately we were young and in the hands of bad management and basically the story ended before it even started properly.
XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Sabrina: This is what you can expect – If you are a metal fan who enjoy well composed, melodic riff-based, catchy heavy metal songs with a thrash metal edge you will love our album!
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Sabrina: Yes- Go get our album if you haven’t already! If you like the music that I described just above – I promise you will not be disappointed! And if you have bought it already – we love you for supporting us!
XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS Rock!
Sabrina: Thank you!
