XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Tom: Love of music getting our message out there, and getting chicks when you are young.lol
XS ROCK: What is your music background?
Tom: Self taught
XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
Tom: Positive outlooks on life and telling people you can do anything you want in this life
XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals?
Tom: We have played every place we have wanted but Europe. I would say playing Europe is in the near future as we are negotiating a few shows in Europe
XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?
Tom: Long term goal is to continue rocking helping people and at least 10 more CD’s
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Tom: Live is where we shine. it is high energy show from beginning to end, with lots of crowd participation.
XS ROCK: What are your songs about?
Tom: all of our songs have deep meanings. Show me the way back home is song of, hope and healing for all military active retired ( POWs MIAs) and their families. Hot Night in the City is about run away young girl who ends up forced into prostitution and in the end is murdered (very true to life) and Rocking the night away is about going out seeing a great rock band and just rocking all night. I have some new songs that have some political statements in them. That’s Just few examples
XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Tom: There so many great times. I would have to say last November after Ross the Boss Friedman called me and said hey bring Held Hostage to NYC and open up for me. We are located in Syracuse NY about 250 miles from NYC. I chartered a bus and sold it out in a few days and seeing Ross the Boss’s face when we pulled up to the Venue with a bus load of over 50 crazy fans for the concert. It was a great moment . It was the first time I had performed with Ross since he left Manowar. Held Hostage did some opening shows for the Manowar, USA tour when they were the worlds loudest band back in the 80s.
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Tom: I was asked to write a song about one of fans death before he dies and play at his funeral .
XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Tom: Actually yes especially my Mother . She loved music my dad was self employed honey bee farmer who worked 7 days a week 12 hours a day and one day he looked at me and said son I think its time you did something with that guitar.
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Tom: Rock N Roll Explosion It’s a song I wrote for all of our loyal fans who waited years for Held Hostage to return.. It is an anthem for all the fans
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Tom: There are several but I would say seeing Randy Rhodes with Ozzy live made me want to play harder and better. He was such a great guitarist
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Tom: Ted Nugent & ACDC
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Tom: The greatest accomplishment in my life would be raising my son as a single father and seeing him turn out to be successful great young man and he is my biggest fan attends every show I play live. In Music I would say Raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for families in need. Whether they lost their homes to fire or needed help with medical bills or even one instance the family child was having surgery and didn’t have the funds to to go tohe children hospital we raisied thousands of fdoallars playing a benefit concert in the 80s andsent the family to be with him.. To me music is about helping people.
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Tom: Real Estate. I have always continued in Real Estate. People ask me how it relates to music and I tell them because in Real Estate you are on stage every day in front of people, making dreams come true for them
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Tom: I use two Marshall cabinets a 100 Watt Marshall lead head and 50 Watt ( Boasted to 450 Watts) JCM 800 Dual channel Marshall head built by the late Dawk ( Manowar, Ritchie Blackmore). I play a fender Strat and custom built Vulcan ( 1of 8 ever built) guitar built for my Brother Ross the Boss Friedman. I got it from Ross after my son was born
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Tom: I think it is very hard on new bands. The internet and streaming has taken away sales from all the bands and this pay to play crap is terrible for new bands. I refuse to play to play.. I do think that Hard rock and Heavy metal are making a big come back. Our crowd sizes are growing in massive numbers.
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Tom: Most people when they first meet me would never realize I am one of the top selling Realtors in the country. I remained true to myself never cut my hair and never pretend to be something I am not..
XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Tom: It depends on what night . I have so many different originals that most people say they can’t brand us. They say great rock band. We opened for the Rods, Ross the Boss band and last week Molly Hatchet and never played the same original songs..
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Tom: Yes our new EP Show Me the way back home. We are giving 50% of the net proceeds to various Veterans groups. Please download it and give it a listen. It is true to life song..
XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with us at XS Rock!
