XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Steven: Breaking News!! We just finished our newest music video for a song called ‘Slow Down’… so excited to let people see this! We had access to this incredible house from the 60’s that has basically never been touched.
XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
Steven: About two years ago I stepped away from a band I started some years before after about 3 years of straight touring. It was time to get creative again and do a lot of writing… that became Don’t Believe In Ghosts.
XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Steven: It’s an inner thing… I guess hearing some songs as a kid that made me feel cool for the first time, made me spend the rest of my life trying to emulate that feeling. It’s also an incredible release for creativity… usually.
XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Steven: I mean they are totally different things… completely different mindsets. I enjoy playing live and we have a lot of fun with it, but if this was all about just playing other peoples songs live I’d not be doing it. To me it’s 100% all about creating and recording… making something out of nothing. When I finished this album, I kind of felt like… oh man, see this is not cool, i’m totally warmed up now, I just ran the marathon, i’m ready for another one.. not to go tell everyone I ran one and ask them to look at pictures of me running it and go show people how I ran it for a year ha ha.
XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Steven: In Hayes Kansas a man in a red pickup truck pulled a gun on me in a dark parking lot… he had that super disconnected look in his eye, like a child who gets excited torturing an animal. He told me he could kill me right now.. and like out of a movie, a cop happened to pull someone over right next to the parking lot and he drove away. That’s pretty damn outrageous.
XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Steven: I’ve had some incredible fans, from asking for me to write out my lyrics for their tattoos to making us care packages on the road. So far nothing has really been too strange… I’m sure if i was more of a drinker i’d have something more sensational to say about this ha ha
XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Steven: Oh yeah, my parents are absolutely incredible. Way more supportive than I could have asked for.
XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Steven: I love playing all these songs, they really make me feel alive… they are real and me right at this moment.
XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Steven: To perform… hmm probably Michael Jackson or Prince. Because they are true performers with an undeniable talent.
XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Steven: There are actually so many bands i’d love to tour with right now… so many people are doing interesting things… Not all … but lots of them.
XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Steven: Finishing this album.. it feels really really good.
XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Steven: I’d probably be a film maker – I was always writing stories and plays and editing videos… so it seems most likely. I also love science but math scares me.
XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Steven: Oh the usual, but with lots of passion.
XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Steven: Its busy, confusing and chaotic. It’s the wild west almost… musical anarchy. But at the same time it’s never been easier to get your ideas together and share them with the world.
XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Steven: While I don’t love Math i know the difference between Bubble Sort and the Merge Sort algorithms.
XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Steven: Positive and hopeful.
XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Steven: I wanna say thanks if you made it this far in this interview, let’s hope something I said stays with you and makes you a better person in one way or another ha ha
XS ROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with XS Rock!
Steven: Thanks for giving me your time an energy, it’s really appreciated!
