Interview With Kevin Amann, Drummer For Burn River Burn

XS ROCK: Tell me about the latest band news? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Kevin: The new album “Neüstonia” is out now! It was recorded in various studios in SF, mixed and mastered and it sounds oh so nice. We also recently released a video for “Thanks for the Ride” – the first single off the new record. We have several shows lined up for the summer and going to tour in the fall!

XS ROCK: How long has the band been together?
Kevin: About 8 years now. They say it takes 10 years to make an overnight success – so we are almost there.

XS ROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Kevin: We all just love Rock ‘n’ Roll. It’s as simple as that. We still love getting together, writing music, making albums and playing shows – because it’s just in our blood.

XS ROCK: What is your music background?
Kevin: All members of the band come from different backgrounds. I’ve played in funk bands, acid jazz bands, and prog rock bands. The rest of the guys have played in metal bands, grunge bands, and classic and modern rock bands.

XS ROCK: What image do you think your music conveys?
Kevin: No frills Rock ‘n’ roll. It’s just fist pumping and head banging.

XS ROCK: What are your immediate music career goals?
Kevin: We’d like to get on a larger tour including the festival circuit. We are always looking for a good manager to help us keep it all together. Possibly getting on a label – but that seems to be less important as time goes on.

XS ROCK: What are your long-term career goals?
Kevin: Similar answer as the last question – but on a grander scale. Like all rock bands – we want our music internationally known and loved. We enjoy the upward climb – we just plan on making music for as long as we can and continue to reach more eyes and ears.

XS ROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Kevin: We actually like it all equally. We have honed the writing process and have been putting out A LOT of new material lately. We are currently working on about 12 new songs and our new album has not been out for very long. Recording is always a blast and we love flushing out new songs during the recording process. We also love to play live and consider ourselves a live band. So, it’s all gravy.

XS ROCK: What are your songs about?
Kevin: Some of our more “serious” song topics cover politics, religion, censorship and the environment. Some of our more whimsical themes are movies, cars, gunfights and Viking adventures. Some of our songs are really not about one thing – we just throw out some lyrics and if it fits the music and rocks – we keep it. That sort of lets the listener determine for themselves what the song means to them.

XS ROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Kevin: Luckily no one has died and amazingly no one has landed in jail…yet We have some road stories but they are a little too incriminating to share in a public forum.

XS ROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Kevin: We were asked to play a 9 year olds birthday party.

XS ROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Kevin: Yes and no – they want me to be happy, but I think they would still rather I was in more normal, stable and lucrative career.

XS ROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Kevin: Sworn to Silence, Waiting, UDig, Kat Lady and The Rift.

XS ROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Kevin: I think seeing what Metallica did in the early days changed my life forever. They created a transcendental live metal experience. I want to do that every time we play – blow people’s minds.

XS ROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Kevin: Most of the bands we love are old school and no longer touring. As far as a bill that could actually exist today? Clutch, Tool, and Queens of the Stone Age.
If it were a tour that could only exist in our dreams: – Soundgarden, Van Halen, and Pantera!

XS ROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Kevin: A few years back we were selected from a huge field of bands to be a finalist by the Bay Area radio station – 107.7 the Bone – to play at their massive annual concert – the Bone Bash.

XS ROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Kevin: We still have part time day jobs. Some of the guys work lighting and sound, I work with non-profits and our bass player does some accounting. So I suppose if we weren’t playing music – we’d likely be doing that stuff – just more of it.

XS ROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Kevin: I play a Tama Starclassic Performer kit with a cannon of a bass drum, two rack and two floor toms. Our guitarists Mike and Chuck play Orange and Mesa Amps and play mostly Gibson guitars (Vs, SGs and Les Pauls). Bass man Marco plays Ampeg with a Thunderbird bass.

XS ROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Kevin: Our Bay Area scene is pumping – especially in the hard rock realm. Many bands doing heavy hitting rock – I call it “post-grunge”. We’ve become friends with and play live with many of the same bands and have a real community forming. It’s pretty rad.

XS ROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Kevin: There’s a 13 year age gap between the oldest member of the band and the youngest – I won’t mention any names.

XS ROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Kevin: Heavy hitting rock with intriguing time signatures, an emphasis on groove, groundbreaking riffs and soaring vocals.

XS ROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Kevin: Check out our new album Neüstonia on bandcamp: https://burnriverburn.bandcamp.com/
