XSROCK: So what’s the latest with Edge Of Paradise? Any new projects coming out, live shows or announcements?
Margarita: Thank you for having me! We’ve been busy working on new music and videos, i’m very excited about the new stuff, it’s an evolution in our sound and we can’t wait to share!
We’ve recently released a trailer to one of the songs “Shade Of Crazy” to give a sample of what’s to come.
We also have some cool shows coming up this summer, playing That Metal Show with Eddie Trunk at M15 in Corona CA, playing a benefit concert for Military Veterans on July 3rd in Las Vegas, and then heading out to the East Coast for a string of dates!
XSROCK: How long has Edge Of Paradise been together?
Margarita: Dave Bates (guitarist) and I started the band in 2011, and with the current lineup with John Chominsky on drums and Nick Ericson on bass, it’s been almost 3 years! We’re very lucky to have found those guys to keep the circus going strong 🙂
XSROCK: What was your main motivation for starting or being in a band?
Margarita: I love music, I love the stage and love sharing that with people, I can’t imagine doing anything else other then music. I played classical piano my whole life and was in theater and dance, so a metal band was right up my alley 😉 Actually I never imagined that I’d be fronting a band, but things happen for a reason and I couldn’t be happier with what I’m doing!
XSROCK: Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?
Margarita: I don’t know if I can pick because I love doing both! I’m addicted to making new songs, I put my heart and soul into each song and that feeling when you hear the final result after tremendous amount of work, it’s a a real rush! And we all love playing shows and touring, seeing our friends and meeting new ones, it’s an incredible feeling to be able to share the music with the crowd and see them respond and be moved by our music, it’s pretty awesome!
XSROCK: Do you have any outrageous tour stories from the road?
Margarita: Ha ha too many! We were touring the east coast in the winter two years ago and we were driving on the freeway and we passed a scene of all these cars turned over and run over deer everywhere, and the next thing you know, our van hits a frozen dead deer on the road! The whole van flew in the air, it busted our radiator and the van was covered in deer blood and hair. We were like out of a horror movie, but we fixed it up though and thankfully made it to all our shows!
XSROCK: What’s the strangest request that you’ve ever received from one of your fans?
Margarita: To make a cover of a Spice Girls song 🙂
XSROCK: Were your parents supportive of your aspirations to play in a rock band?
Margarita: I’m very lucky, my family is very supportive. I’ve always been a performer so I think my parents already accepted it ha ha! My dad is a scientist, but in a way that’s also a very creative form and my mom used to take me to theaters, concerts…pretty much every week, I grew up in Moscow so music and art is a huge part of the culture there, so yes my parents are very supportive!
XSROCK: What are your favorite tracks to play live?
Margarita: Every song has it’s own energy which is cool cause we never get bored playing them, I think Rise For The Fallen and In A Dream are our favorites, they’re very dynamic and are always the people’s favorite. The new song we’re recording now “Alive” is very exciting, we played it at rehearsal and it’s very high energy and has this industrial feel to it, so we can’t wait to add it to our set!
XSROCK: Which band or artist inspired you to perform? Why?
Margarita: Well, Justin Bieber inspired Dave 😉
We all love bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Dio, the great iconic bands, they all created a sound that is timeless and that’s what we’re striving to do, to create something great that can stand the test of time.
XSROCK: If you could design a dream tour for your band, who would be on the bill?
Margarita: Iron Maiden of course 🙂 Really liking Volbeat lately, they’re a great band, also add Lordi to the mix, they got some crazy outfits, great music too!
XSROCK: What do you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
Margarita: Our latest album Immortal Waltz, we are so fortunate to have worked with Michael Wagener on it, he was a huge part in helping us find our sound and it was just really inspiring. And the album is doing really well, so it’s a great feeling that people are relating to the music and we’re very excited to be releasing new music soon, it’s another step in the evolution of our sound! Also we’ve toured over 25 states and it’s not an easy task for a newer band, gonna tackle the East Coast again this August 🙂
XSROCK: If you weren’t performing in a band what kind of career do you think you would have?
Margarita: Ha ha I’d probably join the circus 😉
Maybe a scientist, it’s fascinating, I always read what’s going on, the world is changing very fast!
XSROCK: What type of equipment do you use for live shows?
Margarita: We use The Wizard and Krank amps, Pork Pie or sometimes DW drums, bass rig, I love my Telefunken microphone, we also got some stage geysers, and our light show has gotten more elaborate, we’re adding some cool lasers, thanks to Bongoo stagelasers.com
We put a lot of emphasis on our live show, to make sure we got a huge sound and the visuals to match! 🙂
XSROCK: What do you think of the current music scene?
Margarita: You know it’s good and bad, it’s definitely very hard because you don’t have labels developing bands anymore, you have to really build it up yourself before people want to jump on board, and it’s been a monumental task for us to get this band to where we’re at and there is still a long way to go, but it in a way it’s good, it pushes us to create something great, otherwise you’ll get lost in the mix.
And the whole internet thing is a blessing and a curse. Sometimes it takes away from the value in music and the fact that it’s so easy to record something at home and stick in on the internet over saturates the market and makes people reluctant to check out new music.
Maybe I’m being old fashioned but I still believe that to create something great, it takes time, money and a lot of effort, but when you have quality I think that, at the end, it still prevails. I just miss the anticipation for a record release, how you have to go to a record store to buy it, now everything is so easy and accessible that it takes away from the mystery and excitement.
But you know it’s also great because we’re so lucky to be able to reach people all over the world and we’ve made so many friends along the way and meeting them at shows is the best feeling!
XSROCK: For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?
Margarita: Ha ha people that meet me are sometimes surprised, they’re like, you’re so nice and soft spoken! I guess I look scary in photos, I don’t know 😉
Also, I love sword fighting, but that’s not surprising!
XSROCK: If someone had never heard you before, how would you describe your sound?
Margarita: I would describe us as a heavy metal band, our sound is aggressive but very melodic, with driving rhythms and heavy guitars, you will hear some symphonic and classical elements, our songs are dynamic and sometimes theatrical and will take you on a sonic roller coaster ride!
XSROCK: Is there anything that you’d like to promote or say to your fans out there?
Margarita: We what to say thank you to all our supporters out there, it inspires us every day to be doing what we’re doing! And we can’t wait to meet everyone at our shows! So keep posted for new music and shows!
XSROCK: Thanks again for taking the time to talk with XSROCK!
Margarita: Thank you so much for having me, it was a pleasure!
